Viewing Album:  Horizon Rail HZRX #272 Remote Control Platform (caboose!)

Album Info:While taking pictures of the UP locomotives from the adjacent Duanesburg Road overpass, I caught a faint glimpse of what appeared to be a tuscan red caboose over the UP locomotives. After driving around, I tracked down the appropriate CSX employee and asked permission to take pictures of the caboose. He was happy to oblige, gave me 10 minutes which was more than generous, and I left. Very worth the running around to get permish. Note the "272" is in that custom Pennsylvania RR numeral font Horizon Rail HZRX #272 - Remote Control Platform (ex-MM&A #VB-3) The following history was provided to me by Jeff Bray: "Hey, I know that caboose! This example, VB-3, was one of several that Montreal, Maine & Atlantic ran for their remote control operations. Before some of their B23-7s and B39-8s were made remote, one of the cabooses would normally accompany one or two units during MMA's one-man crew days. An engineer would run the jobs from the throttle over the road and would engage the remote caboose while at customers or in yards. They had those waist type control packs that could be operated from the ground, and the cabooses were hooked to the power by special MU cable setups. They we're symboled VB-1, VB-2 and so on. I knew this wasn't VB-2 right away since this one's cupola doesn't protrude out over the sides like 2's did. When still on MMA, they were actually marked "F" for forward and had full horns and lights on them! I have tons of pictures of the VB-2 in particular. Very cool that you caught this one!"
