PRR Altoona Works, #1 of 3, 1953 |
Description: |
Hollyman. Here is the first of three photos of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Works. This photo was taken in August of 1953 by Tom Hollyman. In the foreground is the 7th Street Bridge, situated over the mainline tracks (Pittsburgh to the bottom, Harrisburg to the top). Sandwiched between 7th Street, Chestnut Avenue, and the mainline tracks are the Passenger Car Shops, the Finishing Roundhouse, and the Erecting & Machine Shop beyond them in the distance. The next landmark is the 4th Street Footbridge; situated under it are WORKS Tower (to the right of the mainline tracks) and SOUTH Tower (to the right of the yard tracks). Beyond the Bridge and adjacent to the mainline are the Westbound Dispatch Tracks (for locomotive crew changes); next over is the Eastbound Receiving Yard. |

PRR Altoona Works, #2 of 3, 1953 |
Description: |
Hollyman. Here is the second of three photos of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Works. This photo was taken in August of 1953 by Tom Hollyman. At the lower left is the 17th Street Bridge and the Hollidaysburg Branch curving under it; across the tracks is ALTO Tower. Just to the right of the Bridge are the PRR's Test Plant and the Locomotive Test Plant behind it. Paralleling the mainline tracks (Pittsburgh to the bottom, Harrisburg to the top) between the 17th Street Bridge and the 12th Street Footbridge are the Altoona Car Shops. This area was once home to the Altoona Machine Shops and three functioning roundhouses. At the left end of the 12th Street Footbridge are the Passenger Station and its venerable trainshed. Near the center is the 7th Street Bridge. Sandwiched between 7th Street, Chestnut Avenue, and the mainline tracks are the Passenger Car Shops, the Finishing Roundhouse, and the Erecting & Machine Shop beyond them in the distance. Just past the 4th Street Footbridge and to the immediate right of the mainline tracks are the Westbound Dispatch Tracks (for locomotive crew changes); next over is the Eastbound Receiving Yard. |
