Album Info:Here is a four-page article by Mr. Thomas C. Shedd, Jr., entitled "'Take 'er out, Luther.'" It was published originally in the February 1951 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 16-19. "[D]etector cars first appeared about 1927, when inventor Elmer Sperry was hired by the American Railway Association (now the A.A.R.) to develop a workable method of locating fissured rails in track. The pioneer Sperry cars were forerunners of the fleet of brightly-colored 'doodlebugs' now operated by Sperry Rail Services, by the A.A.R., and by individual railroads." (Page 18)
