Typical brown painted, two chute open hopper that the Monon had. Specs - one of 111 open hoppers, dimensions - 36'6" length, 10'6" width, 10'8" height, modest 2145 cubic ft capacity. No date, location or photographer was given for the color negative this scan came from. A Penn Central loco (cut off to the right side) puts this around 1969. Does anyone recognize the brown YMCA building in the background? Looks like it also has a sign "FILERR" on the left of it. |

Robert L. Gibson caught this all steel center cupola Monon caboose passing through Lafayette, IN, probably on its way to the Monon shops. The caboose was purchased from the International Car Company in 1952 and originally was numbered C-366. After being absorbed into the L&N roster, it wore the numbers 912, 6912, 159 and ended up as SBD #12159. |
