Some old rail
Title:  Some old rail
Description:  Some rail that was left behind when the "West Shore" was torn-up. Looking west here from Herman Rd. barely 1/10 of a mile north of CSX's New York/Chicago mainline in the town of Camillus, NY. (for a closer look at the rail, see the next photo in the album)

RS&E flyover
Title:  RS&E flyover
Description:  This is where the Rochester, Southern & Eastern went over the old West Shore just east of the village of Weedsport, NY. Looking ahead in the photo is a north view on the old R.O.W. of the West Shore, the utility line is where the RS&E (trolley) was. There is also an underground pipeline parallel to the utility line.

Old rail
Title:  Old rail
Description:  Another view of what's left of the West Shore. Obviously it's been a long time since any train has traveled on this track. I guess "they" just did'nt get around to ripping this section up.

Short bridge
Title:  Short bridge
Description:  Driving along Rt.38 between Moravia and Harford, NY you can see things like this that still are here even though the Lehigh Valley RR is gone. One nice thing about winter is that it's easier to see the contour of the earth, and the profile of old r.o.w.'s!

Old culvert
Title:  Old culvert
Description:  Believe it or not, this is the old r.o.w. of the New York & Oswego, Midland's Auburn branch. The line was built in the late 1860's and like a lot of railroads back in those days it was troubled from the start. This area between Freeville and Auburn was and still is sparsely populated, relatively speaking, and therefore demand for a railroad's services is not enough to keep a railroad profitable in the long run. The Ithaca, Auburn & Western was the last of many companys that operated the NY&Ontario Midland's Auburn branch when the line was abandoned in 1891. You can see evidence of this old R.O.W. all along Rt.34 between Genoa and Venice Center, NY. In fact, in the office of Genoa's DPW there are a couple of old photos from when the tracks were still there. This particular spot is on the west side of Rt.34 just south of Ford Rd. I shot it from the west side of the r.o.w. in the afternoon.

Lowville & Beaver River RR
Title:  Lowville & Beaver River RR
Description:  Looking towards Croghan from Rt.126. By now the rails might be totally obscured; one of these days I should make a return trip and see. By the way, I was thinking of this after looking at an album titled "No roster shots here" by fellow contributor David Larrabee; I highly recommend looking at it!

Lowville & Beaver River RR
Title:  Lowville & Beaver River RR
Description:  I don't know what kind of bridge this is called but it looks like it can turn 90 degrees in order to allow tall boats to pass through that would otherwise hit the bridge if it would'nt turn. Looking towards Beaver Falls from the outskirts of Lowville.
