The building in the distance was a plastic pipe manufacturer, and Conrail customer. The factory burned in a spectacular fire two days before Christmas that year, and they relocated the new plant to Waverly, with rail service on the Ithaca Branch. |

There was a side road to a water plant just off NY 17C. It was about 1/4 mile down to the tracks, then across to the plant. The road was usually closed off by a gate, but sometimes it would be open. I came on it open one weekend when I knew OIBU was approaching, so I went down to set up at the pair of signals I often saw from the road. This is the result. Wish I had pursued it more, and gotten all the different trains that ran here at this location. |

Right here. Endicott Johnson Shoe Co was the reason those two towns existed. By the 1990s, they were but a memory in the area, with only one plant still open, making Frye boots in Endicott. This odd structure was rarely used during the time I lived in Endicott, which was a good thing. We are looking at the mounting for the flood gate that would be put across the tracks in the event the Susquehanna flooded. The gate would be dropped into the slot, and sandbags placed on either side. There was seepage-they were not water tight-but it kept floodwaters from getting through and inundating west Endicott. I saw the river come up over the tracks only twice in 18 years, but not here. That event was along the George F Highway in Endwell, near MP 219. |
