Title:
PRR 5820, BH-50, 1960
Description:
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1960. Prominent here is PRR engine #5820, a BH-50 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a BP-60 passenger engine rated at 3,000 horsepower in February of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as a 2,250 horsepower BH-50 for freight and helper duty, and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. Standing in front of it is Mr. Ken Sellers ~ a long-time resident of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, who worked as a Hostler for the PRR. Mr. Sellers was kind enough to give me an unofficial, inside look at several Diesel units stored next to the East Altoona Roundhouse ~ including #5820.
