Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1955. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9838 (in Brunswick Green) and a "B" unit (in five-stripe Tuscan Red) whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9838 is an EFP-15 constructed in April of n 1952. Note that the fresh train crew is waiting for a front-end helper unit to couple on, and then they will proceed up the Allegheny Mountains to Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and points West. Dominating the background are portions of the PRR's 12st Car Shops. The exact date is not recorded.

Description:  This is a much later (circa 1960's or so) reprint of an Altoona built Pennsylvania 2-10-4 taken around the mid-1950's.With Alan Fricker's help, it probably was in the Altoona scrap line around 1956 or so. Unfortunately no information was supplied with this photo and the number of the loco is unreadable. Glen James eagle eye was able to read the numberboard as #6440. Thanks to all!

Description:  Aerotrain. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 16 August 1956. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. After departing Pittsburgh and crossing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, it has stopped at the Altoona Passenger Station for a crew change and to discharge/board passengers. Soon, it will pass under the 12th Street Footbridge on its way to Philadelphia and New York City. Note the headlight of the waiting helper engine in the distance.

Shown here are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9616 and two more "FA" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9616 is an AF-16 built in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. They are pulling a string of hopper cars under the 4th Street Bridge on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

In this context, they're returning to East Altoona for yet more helper/pusher runs up "The Mountain."
