MP SW 6006
Title:  MP SW 6006
Description:  Mystery locomotive on the Pielet Brothers setout track at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I believe this was an EMD Model SW, the spotting feature are the "falsies" welded to the frame at the inside corners of the stepwells. The Model SC (Cast frame) had similar shapes but were inset more and were part of the stepwells. It looks like Missouri Pacific paint. The MP had four SC's, but acquired a pair of SW's by way of subsidiary Union Terminal Railway. The following is from the book, Missouri Pacific Diesel Power, by Kevin EuDaly:

The SC and the SW were built simultaneously at EMC, though EMC was pushing the SW which had a fabricated welded frame ("W" for welded and "C" for cast). The SC had a cast frame which EMC could not produce in its own shop, hence the attempt to sell the SW over the SC. Though there has been some confusion between the two models in the past, close-up photographs have revealed that the MoPac units were indeed SC's with cast frames (road numbers 9000-9003). When welded frames began in late 1936, many railroad people viewed them as a cheap imitation for a substantial cast frame. Consequently, engineers at La Grange decided to disguise their welded frames by applying a fake sheet metal section at each corner of the frame. These appeared on the SW1's, NW2's and TR2's until April 1949, when a cost cutting measure struck them from the package.By this time no one cared about whether frames were welded or cast. In 1938 MoPac subsidiary Union Terminal Railway (UT) got into the diesel act by purchasing an SW from EMC, which was outshopped as UT-5. In December the Saint Joseph Belt (SJB) picked up an SW (SJB-10).

In the roster section of the book, the following is shown for the SW's: UT-5 became SJB-5, then MP 6005, built 05/38 (c/n 718), retired 8/65, to PNC, to Pickens, renumbered PIRR-3. UT-10 is shown at becoming SJB-10, then MP 6006, built 12/38 (c/n 751) retired 9/63, scrapped. So by process of elimination, the locomotive shown MAY have been MP 6006, built as either SJB-10 or UT-10.

PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570
Title:  PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570
Description:  PRR DR-4-4-1500 9570 across from EMD at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 73701), one of 34 DR-4-4-1500 "Sharknose" A units numbered in the 9568A - 9593A and 9700A - 9707A number series. Previous to the PRR order, Baldwin's DR-4-4-1500 was delivered in the "baby face" carbody style. The PRR's initial order of 26 A-units and 26 B-units were delivered in 1949, and a follow-up order for eight A-B sets was placed in 1949 for 1950 delivery. These last eight units introduced yet another refinement; the cab was moved one foot forward, with a corresponding reduction in the length of the nose. Number 9570 is seen here on its last mile, on the Pielet Brothers setout track across the IHB main from EMD's plant in La Grange.

SAL SDP35 1115
Title:  SAL SDP35 1115
Description:  Seaoard Air Line SDP35 1115 and Chicago & Eastern Illinois GP35 261 on the setout track at EMD's plant in La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the poor quality of this photo, it was an afterthought. I was photographing locomotives behind me on Pielet Borthers setout track that were about to be scrapped, and as I was leaving, I turned around and shot this, finishing out the roll of film, not thinking too much about new locomotives. I figured I had plenty of time to shoot these two on a better day. Live and learn!

SAL DR-6-4-1500 2700
Title:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2700
Description:  Seaboard Air Line DR-6-4-1500 #2700 at LaGrange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2700 was built by Baldwin in November 1947 (c/n 73396).

This photo was taken across the IHB main line from EMD, this locomotive is awaiting its date with Pielet Brothers Scrap Metal. This is not the appearance it had when it left Baldwin. The SAL purchased three cab units (#'s 2700-2702) known by the nickname "Babyface", and placed this unit in service November 23, 1947 at Tampa, Florida. Numbers 2701-2702 were placed in service January 1948 at Hamlet, North Carolina. When delivered, the nose door was flush with the cab front, no MU was visible, and the headlight was a single bulb with a refector. The only other railroad to purchase this model was the NYC, and those units had different style numberboards and a cast pilot with retractable couplers. Within a year of delivery, the NYC changed out the trucks in an attempt to improve riding qualities. The NYC units were stored by 1958, in spite of re-powering with EMD 567's in 1955, and off the roster by 1960. The SAL units operated mostly on secondary runs in Florida, lasting 17 years until traded to EMD for SDP35's in 1964.

SAL DR-6-4-1500 2700
Title:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2700
Description:  Seaboard Air Line DR-6-4-1500 2700 at LaGrange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The SAL ordered this locomotive from Baldwin in September 1946 (c/n 73396), and placed it in service November 23, 1947 at Tampa, Florida. The DR-5-4-1500 model designation translates as: Diesel Road - 6 axles - 4 traction motors (the center axles were unpowered) - 1500 horsepower.

Only nine of this model were built, four A units and two B units for the NYC, and three A units for SAL. The SAL units remained essentially unchanged (except for headlight, front door, and MU connections), but the NYC replaced the GSC Commonwealth trucks with drop equalizer trucks in attempt to minimize the rough ride, and in the process, had to shorten the fuel tanks to accommodate the truck change. During the mid-1950's, the NYC sent all their DR-6-4-1500's to EMD and replaced the Baldwin 608SC prime movers with 567's, retaining the Westinghouse electrical gear, but replacing Baldwin's electro-pneumatic throttle and MU equipment with EMD's. Even that was not good enough, the NYC units were stored by 1958, and off the roster by December 1960. Behind 2700 in this photo are some B&O Sharknoses, and all are awaiting scrapping, traded to EMD for new power.

SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701
Title:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701
Description:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701 at LaGrange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the last mile for this locomotive, built in January 1948 (c/n 73397), it's pictured on the on the PieWet Brothers Scrap Iron & Metal Company setout track. It was traded to EMD as credit for a SDP35, pictured in the lower left of the frame on EMD's setout track.

Baldwin built only seven cab and two booster units of this model. In February 1946, the NYC ordered two A-B-A sets, and SAL ordered three cab units (#'s 2700-2702), for a total production of nine units in seven months. The NYC introduced their units in service November 22, 1947, and the SAL placed their first unit number 2700 in service the next day. The SAL units spent their service life mostly on secondary runs in Florida, and after 17 years of service, were traded to EMD. Although the NYC re-powered their copies with EMD 567's, the SAL retained their original Baldwin 608SC diesels to the end. The SAL did modify the headlight, the door below the headlight, and added MU to the nose. The numberboards on the SAL units were a Baldwin design, although the NYC versions were more like EMD FT numberboards. The model designation DR-6-4-1500 translates to: Diesel Road, 6 axles, 4 traction motors, 1500 horsepower.

SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701
Title:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701
Description:  SAL DR-6-4-1500 2701 built January 1948 (c/n 73397) at Pielet Brothers setout track, LaGrange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler.

Baldwin designed the DR-6-4-1500 as a dual service locomotive to compete with EMD's F-3 and Alco's FA-1, but with the added advantage of being easy on light rail branch lines by virtue of its GSC Commonwealth A-1-A trucks. It was powered by the 8-cylinder turbocharged model 608SC diesel prime mover, and in comparison to the freight only DR-4-4-1500, it was slightly longer, 61 feet for the DR-6-4-1500, versus 55 feet 6 inches for the DR-4-4-1500. Only nine DR-6-4-1500's were built, seven cab units and two boosters. The SAL owned three cab units, all retired in 1964.

TRRA VO-660 531
Title:  TRRA VO-660 531
Description:  Terminal Railroad Association of Saint Louis VO-660 531 at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 531 was built in July 1940 (c/n 62395) and was retired sometime before this photo date as it is seen on Pielet Brothers (scrapper) setout track across from EMD's plant in La Grange. It was powered by a 6-cylinder normally-aspired De La Vergne VO diesel developing 660 horsepower. It appears that 14 VO-660's were built with the oval radiator grill intake and side exhausts for the radiator heat. By 1941 this radiator arrangement was changed to the more familiar peaked front intake and top exhaust. This was the result of Baldwin purchasing radiators (and using spring mounts for cushioning) instead of assembling them. The assembled units often leaked with hard coupling moves, and were more expensive to assemble and install. The resulting VO-660 (and VO-1000) switchers were lengthened by 10 inches to accommodate the new radiator system, and later refinements included an expansion tank mounted just above the radiator, and automatic shutters.

Title:  PRR 9453, FF-16, 1965
Description:  Oil Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in La Grange, Illinois, on 17 April 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9453 and #9498. Both are FF-16's built by Fairbanks-Morse, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in April of 1965; #9453 was built in September of 1950 while #9498 was built in November of 1950. Looks to me like they're about to be traded-in for younger (i.e. GM-EMD) models!
