CNW Neenah Yard Office |
Description: |
Despite local boundries, for the CNW, this little office is for the Neenah yard. The yard is no longer anything near as important as it once was. Most tracks have been torn up. The yard is still used to sort the cars for a handful of businesses still served on this truncated stretch of former CNW mainline. The track seen curving here used to serve the large Gilbert Papers mill which received many carloads of supplies. There are still a couple businesses served via this spur. |

CN local pulls 4 cars westward through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 24 Mar. '14. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |

Description: |
CN local shoves past the Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., Menasha, WI, on 28 Mar. '14. It was preparing to head back to the former SOO yard in Neenah after servicing several industries in the Twin Cities of Menasha and Neenah. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert Paper mill, it was built along the canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers (who then founded a new paper company with their father and another brother). The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to an employee in Mar. '14. The name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking paper, high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products. When the closure was announced, it was claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable, which seems to be the catch phrase of every 21st Century American corporation when they shut down any historic industrial facility. |

Description: |
The Canadian National switches the General Chemical facility in Menasha, WI. The industrial spur this is located on was once used to serve the Gilbert Paper Company mill in Menasha. Gilbert Paper was served by two spurs, the other spur came across from the other side of the Fox River, through U.S. Papers and served Gilberts and Banta Corp. Some of the cars spotedd at Gilbert Paper on that spur were on a trestle over the water. Milwaukee Road, Soo Line and Chicago and Northwestern could all be seen on the rails in this paper producing area prior to 1987. |

GTW 4924 and IC 3110 |
Description: |
A pair of CN locals meet at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 30 Apr. '14. One, GTW 4924, was going to collect a string of gondolas full of old ties before heading back to Neenah. The other local, IC 3110, was likely coming from Hilbert. I can’t imagine there is this much activity in this small yard very often. |

CN 5542, BCOL 4651, CN 8821, and CN 2007 |
Description: |
CN ore train crosses the Menasha Channel of the Fox River via former joint MILW/ SOO bridge and approaches the junction with the former C&NW mainline as it crawls through Menasha, WI pulling 215 ore cars on 5 May '14. It pulled up as far as the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal, halted, then reversed to back into the former SOO yard at Neenah. Train had four locomotives, CN 5542, BCOL 4651, CN 8821, and CN 2007. I am left to wonder if there has ever been this much horsepower on this line. |
