CB&Q NW2 9209
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9209
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9209 at Naperville, Illinois on September 4, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On this photo date, 9209 was the assigned power for the East End Way Freight, which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. Because it was road power and the train was an Extra, it displays class lights as required by the rules.

CB&Q NW2 9209
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9209
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9209 on the eastbound East End Way Freight (Extra 9209 East to the Dispatcher) at Naperville, Illinois, September 4, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a pre-war switcher, built in April 1941 (c/n 1290) on EMD Order E376. The Burlington received 17 pre-war NW2's (9203-9219) before EMD was restricted from building switchers by the War Production Board. They were delivered with short exhaust stacks, only a couple of inches above the hood. The Burlington added home made straight stacks, and in this case, added covers to keep the rain and snow out. On the running board ahead of the cab is an enclosure and connected to that enclosure is a box on top of the hood. This was ATS (Automatic Train Stop) equipment required to operate over the C&NW main between Agnew and Sterling. If this locomotive (or 9208) was not available to operate Trains 92 and 93, the CB&Q would pay a fine to the C&NW, and the C&NW would be required to hold its trains east of Sterling and west of Agnew until the Q train cleared the appropriate control point. This locomotive also has class lights installed, required of all CB&Q locomotives used in road service. Engineer Fred Huntley is about to board his charge and back out onto the main and head for Downers Grove, having finished switching Naperville. This locomotive became BN 506 and was retired in May 1983.

CB&Q F3 125D
Title:  CB&Q F3 125D
Description:  CB&Q F3 125D westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as the trailing cab unit of CB&Q motor (CB&Q term for locomotive) 125, built as an A-B-B-A set of F3's drawbar connected to form a single locomotive, built in May 1948 (c/n 5881) on EMD Order E957A (the B-units were built on EMD Order E957B), and the pictured unit was sold for scrap to Precision Enginering during November 1965. Not my best photo, and I almost didn't bother with it, except it is an historical record of this locomotive in its duties.

Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 22, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a bit unusual to see a solid train of stainless steel coaches on a fantrip. My notes indicate this was a trip to Rockford, Illinois. On the rear is the Silver Solarium, the spare dome-observation from the California Zephyr pool.

Title:  CB&Q F3 134D
Description:  CB&Q F3 134D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Almost invisible past the signal bridge on the right side is excursion steam locomotive 4960 backing a fantrip to Aurora. I'm not sure of the occasion, but I have several photos showing 4960 and train in the siding at Naperville on this date. I do not have the flyer for this trip, but I have one for the previous Sunday (11/22/1964) for a trip to Rockford, and another flyer for a couple of Sunday's after this date (12/13/1964) advertising a trip from Chicago to Santa Claus Land (two hours west of Aurora), possibly Ottawa or Flagg Center, near Oregon, Illinois, where there was a wye to turn the train.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a steam special for local school children. Earlier the special picked up the chldren and left Naperville westbound to an unknown destination. Upon return, the childern were unloaded, and the train backed from Naperville to Aurora as seen in this photo. This locomotive had a steam leak on this side for a short period of time.

Here is one special in the siding at Naperville on a dreary day awaiting the arrival of the school children in Naperville.

Title:  CB&Q NW2 9224
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9224 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 2, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3620) on EMD Order E699, became BN 521, and was retired in August 1983. It is seen here on the eastbound East End Way Freight (Clearance Form A would address this train as Extra 9224 East). Having finished switching Naperville, the train is headed east against normal traffic on Track 1, which usually hosted westbound traffic. The way freight will likely leave the main at Downers Grove, freeing Track 1 for westbound Dinkys (commuter trains).

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 5, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. About a mile behind this scene to the west was River Road. At the time of this photo, River Road was not heavily traveled, and warranted only crossbucks to protect motorists. All trains would signal the usual two longs - one short - one long, crossing signal, giving me a moment to decide if I should grab my camera. Of course, a steam whistle instead of a horn is reason enough to get the camera and get out in the cold. Here is 4960 running light eastbound, likely heading for a fantrip assignment out of Chicago. I have no information about that trip, although I have a flyer for the trip the following week, December 13, a Santa Claus Special from Chicago to "Santa Claus Land" and return. I have no idea where Santa Claus Land was, but it was two hours out of Aurora, and would have been a place where the train (or at least, the locomotive) could have been turned. However, on this day the CB&Q gave me an early Christmas present, my very own personal photo runby.

CB&Q E8 9974
Title:  CB&Q E8 9974
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 westbound approaching the Naperville station on December 5, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was Saturday, and judging by the shadows, around noon. According to the CB&Q's Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #9 (effective Sunday October 25, 1964) this would be train #205, Saturday Only Passenger, due in Naperville at 12:22 PM. Also of interest is a two car Dinky without a power car. Several locomotives were modified to allow the 74 volts DC produced by the auxiliary generator to also power the lighting of a maximum of two gallery cars. Locomotives known to have been modified were numbers 9937B, 9938B, 9941B, 9945A, 9946B, 9948A, 9948B, 9971-74, and 9976. In addition, number 9946A was modified but restricted to one car.

CB&Q NE1 14351
Title:  CB&Q NE1 14351
Description:  CB&Q NE1 14351 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The sign by the door reads: SHIPPING DOCUMENTS LOCATED HERE. Somewhat unusual, but the CB&Q assigned waycars (caboose) to specific Conductors, so this may have been a custom modification. I recall that this waycar was assigned to Mr. John Sylogye.

I became an honorary member of the crew around this date when I started hanging around and they became aware that my step-father operated the cafeteria at Kroehler Manufacturing Company, where the most switching was done in Naperville. I was allowed to fill their coffee thermoses! They got free hot coffee, I was out of their hair for a while, and I felt like I was contributing. I remember the smell of burning coal when I visited the interior of 14351, and I tasted my first cup of coffee in that waycar, hanging out with the crew after we completed the job.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 259
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 259 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois, December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1953 (c/n 18975) on EMD Order 5312 for 15 GP7's, it became BN 1615 and was retired in December 1981. Although equipped with a steam generator, it is seen here with caps on the generator stacks to keep the moisture out. It is working the East End Way Freight, and having finished switching Naperville, it is backing west onto the main to continue east and work the industries between Naperville and Congress Park, then it will return later in the day to Eola to tie up.

Title:  CB&Q PA-14A 7106
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad coach class PA-14A 7106 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by the CB&Q's Aurora, Illinois shops in August 1928 and was rebuilt in August 1949, retired and converted to MOW 251194 December 20, 1968 at Havelock, Nebraska. I don't know the exact retirment date. The CB&Q received 34 new bi-level gallery cars, including six cab-control cars, in 1965, which likely meant retirement for the single level cars. I remember seeing long lines of these cars stored in Eola Yard for some time during the mid-1960's.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9994 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1954 (c/n 19633), this locomotive became BN 9994 on March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District and leased back to the BN on August 18, 1972. It was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen during May 1973, returned as 9924, and was retired July 1992. On the left side of this photo is the East End Way Freight waiting for this Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train) to clear. The way freight will back onto the main and cross over all three main tracks to work Moser Lumber, then continue east to work the other industries between here and Congress Park, returning to Eola later in the day.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9971
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 13, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiles. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18313). Usually, the CB&Q would have attached a power car to this train. The power car was a modified commuter coach with a generator, but in this case certain locomotives were modified to allow some of the power from the locomotive's auxiliary generator to be routed to the coach's lights. The air conditioning was provided by onboard Waukesha engine powered by four propane cylinders on each bilevel coach. The heat was steam. There wasn't a lot of electrical demand in those days.

Built in September 1951 (c/n 13179) on EMD Order 5072, it was equipped with a steam generator, which is capped with metal covers in this photo. This locomotive became BN 1566 and was retired in March 1983. It is seen here about to back the eastbound East End Way Freight across all three of the Burlington's three main tracks. The swiches are manned by two of the crewmen, and although they are manually operated, they are electrically locked by the dispatcher. Upon receiveing permission, the switches were unlocked and lined for the crossing move, and immediately relined for the main. The way freight will occupy Track 3 for about an hour or so, as he switches Moser Lumber on the south side, and then heads east for Downers Grove.

Title:  CB&Q Detector Tow Car 9060
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Detector Tow Car 9060 at Naperville, Illinois on January 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This Tow Car was built in 1951 on a chassis supplied by Buda, powered by a Buda 150hp diesel engine connected to a Fuller Company transmission and mechanical drive system. The carbody was fabricated by Jacob Press & Company, and the components were assembled in CB&Q's Aurora Shops. It was built to replace Tow Car 9040, a Buda "school bus" built in 1940. Trailing is Detector Car 3, which contained a small diesel engine and testing apparatus to detect rail defects.

CB&Q E8 9945A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9945A
Description:  A pause in shoveling as Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A departs westbound on the middle track at Naperville, Illinois on January 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A fortuitous click of the shutter if ever there was one. In the right background is the station agent at Naperville wheeling the two-wheel baggage cart across the tracks after loading from the power baggage car, a job I was permitted to do when business demanded. I was a paperboy at the time of the photo and Sunday supplements often arrived by train. On a busy day, I got to do the job.

CB&Q GP30 971
Title:  CB&Q GP30 971
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 971 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 6, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1963 (c/n 28293) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2248 and was retired in January 1985. Eight GP30's were built on EMD Order 7652 (#'s 970-977), and they were Phase II GP30's. At the request of the UP, EMD added a 10 inch cab extension on this side (the left, or Fireman's side) to better accommodate the crew, thus creating a Phase II GP30. The spotting feature of the extended cab is the lack of a stanchion behind the cab at the bend in the handrail. Complete GP30 Phase rosters can be found in the July 1989 Mainline Modeler Magazine, page 53. Note the second freight car in the consist is a tri-level auto rack loaded with new automobiles, to which the CB&Q is applying a liberal coat of diesel exhaust.
