Description:  A 109 car UNG coal train for NYSEG in Johnson City passes the semaphore at Waverly, which has dropped to approach, then stop. This signal action was one of the things that made them so cool to see.

CGAL on the Tier
Title:  CGAL on the Tier
Description:  CGAL, the Corning-Allentown train that ran the ex LV to Allentown, accessed the Lehigh Line via a connection from the ex EL at Waverly. It has just gotten its clearance onto the Lehigh and is starting past the semaphore, and will shortly take the switch at block station WAVE to head for Sayre and then on to Allentown.

Past the signals
Title:  Past the signals
Description:  The semaphore at Waverly was on a mast, and at one time hosted a warning light for a hot box detector a few miles to the west on track 2-note the pole sticking straight down below the signal. The signal on the track 1 was unfortunately a tri light unit, so no twin semaphores here. It was still a good shot as we see 270 rolling east behind an SD40 mix with 23 cars.

Along the rocks
Title:  Along the rocks
Description:  One of the more interesting, but hard to get, shots was this on along the rock ledge west of Waverly. TV 202 is making its way east under O'Brien's Inn, a landmark along the cliff for many years. The hard part about this shot was that you had to park on the shoulder of NY 17 east, an expressway, and climb up a steep embankment, risking getting run off(or tickeyed) by the state troopers. The location is just as you approach the exit 60 off ramp.

Title:  205 west
Description:  205 is about to pass under the US 220 bridge at the west end of Waverly. This shot gives a view of how things changed there in the previous decade. The train is on the original #1 track. The roadbed for track 2 is visible as the overgrown section to the right of the train, then as a tail track for the Leprino Foods siding. Part of their former siding is seen in the bushes to the far right. The red building at far left is approximately the site of the Erie station, which was demolished by a 1967 derailment. The connection to the ex Lehigh Valley is about where the overpass is in the distance.

Description:  41T rolls its 31 cars through Waverly in golden light. This was normally a mid day train, and is running a little late today, which is working to my advantage, as is the clean CN unit leading, making this shot at the model railroad buildings here look prettier than they really are.

Meeting a local

Description:  41T is in the distance approaching Waverly as H 10, behind a C40-8 and GP 59 rolls down the Lehigh Secondary, which connects the Southern Tier Line to the ex LV at Sayre. On Conrail days, daily Corning-Allentown trains CGAL and ALCG used this line to go down the Valley, as well as access the Ithaca Branch for coal and salt traffic. NS still uses the line for the latter, and to reach GE Railcar in Sayre, but the line is no longer a through route, with NS routing Allentown traffic via Binghamton and the D&H.
