C&NW Manitowoc, WI Depot
Title:  C&NW Manitowoc, WI Depot
Description:  The northeast and northwest walls of the old C&NW depot at Manitowoc, WI on 20 Aug. '14. The depot was built by the MLS&W and dates to at least 1883. Some references suggest it could be the original depot built around the time the railroad was incorporated in 1872. C&NW built a new depot about a mile to the west in 1945, but that one no longer exists. A couple of awkward additions were constructed on this one after the railroad stopped using it. It is/was used by Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. They have a newer facility, so I’m not sure if they still use this building or not. The currently CN tracks are on the right.

Trackmobile Magnum 4250 TM
Title:  Trackmobile Magnum 4250 TM
Description:  A Trackmobile Magnum 4250 TM appears toy-like as it shuttles flatcar loads of plate steel past the massive Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. facility at Manitowoc, WI on 16 Apr. '15. The facility is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Briess purchased the facility from Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc. in 2014, after it had been idle since 2011. It was started by the Rahr brewing family in 1847. They owned it until the Rahr Malting Co., a.k.a. Manitowoc Malting Plant, was sold to Anheuser-Busch in 1962. While the west side is still adorned with familiar Budweiser bottles and cans today, it was adorned with the Kingsbury beer logos when I was a kid.

Soo Bridge Across the Manitowoc
Title:  Soo Bridge Across the Manitowoc
Description:  The Soo Line crossed this bridge as it entered the main part of Manitowoc. It passed under the CNW Two Rivers Spur a couple of hundred feet past the rivers edge and continued on to the Soo yard nearby. The track to the yard is now gone and the main line from this bridge is onto the connecting track which puts it on the old Two Rivers Spur. The spur is out of service to Two Rivers but The CN uses it to get to the CNW yard from which they run the local crews. There are still some customers on the Two Rivers Spur in town between this bridge and the yard.

CN 622629
Title:  CN 622629
Description:  A cut of bulhead flats waiting to be picked up from the yard for the former Budweiser malting facility in Manitowoc. The facility is now owned by Briess Malting. There has been some work renovating and improving the facility since Briess took over in 2014. These flats brought loads of plate steel which a construction company was using in it's work at the facility. The yard tracks on the right used to extend beyond the red flags visible at the end of the rails, and serve the SS Badger before rail service on the ferry ended.

Chicago and Northwestern Low Bridge
Title:  Chicago and Northwestern Low Bridge
Description:  Looking along the rails through the former CNW bridge across the Manitowoc River on the Two River Spur Track. The spur track runs 9miles from Manitowoc to Two Rivers as part of what was the Shoreline Sub of the CNW. The view looks toward the direction of Two Rivers, as it would be by rail, not by compass direction. The spur is out of service, but the connection track that connected this part of the line to the Soo Line is still in place and is in fact the entrance for the CN into Manitowoc. The CN is the only road in town now and comes from Neenah along the Manitowoc Sub.

Chicago & Northwestern Bridge over Son Line Right of Way
Title:  Chicago & Northwestern Bridge over Son Line Right of Way
Description:  The CNW Two River Spur Track had this interesting bridge over the Soo Line right of way into Manitowoc. The Soo!ran straight under the bridge, where the track connecting with the CNW was the one that runs off to the right. From this point, the Soo rails are out of service, with no connection to the outside world. Satellite footage shows some of the rails still exist within the private confines of some of the industries in town. This bridge is dated to 1896, and the spur track'had a maximum weight limit of 210,000 lbs. (CNW Timetable No.6 effective Jan. 1 1984)

The tracks in the foreground are remnants of the small yard that used to service one of two car ferries that used to tie up at Manitowoc, the slip is out of frame to right. This particular ferry still runs, but it no longer carries rail cars across the floating section of US 10 between Wisconsin and Michigan.
