Description:
CB&Q GP7 210 at Naperville, Illinois on February 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1951 (c/n 13179) on EMD Order 5072 for 40 GP7's, it became BN 1566 and was retired in March 1983. It is seen here backing the East End Way Freight out of Naperville onto Track 1, and will cross over all three of Burlington's main tracks to end up on Track 3. The way freight will then head east to switch industries between here and Congress Park, where it will reverse and head back to its point of origin, Eola, spotting 210 at the roundhouse for servicing.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The building on the left was the Naperville News Agency, my source of employment as a newspaper boy in my early teen years. You may notice steam at the front of the locomotive. One of the principles of steam heat was that the steam eventually condensed back into water. Generally, the steam valves at either end of the train were cracked open slightly to let that water escape.

CB&Q U25B 103
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 103 westbound on the CGI at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CGI was an expedited freight train between Cicero, Illinois and Grand Island, Nebraska, and featured a pool of locomotives from the CB&Q and UP. It started in the late GP9 era (about 1960) and lasted (I believe) to the BN merger. Usually the newest locomotives were used, but I got a shot of a similar lashup headed by a Q F2. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35197), became BN 5427, and was retired in July 1981.

CB&Q F3 165C
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 165C eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was delivered in October 1948 to the CB&Q as 138A (c/n 7012) on EMD Order E957A, the lead unit of a four unit F3 set 138. The motive power people decided they would prefer a 4500 horsepower locomotive, so they split the 138 four unit set in half, and added a new F7 cab unit to each A-B F3 set, and renumbered this particular set as 165. Although the suffix letters were not displayed in the numberboards until couplers were substituted for the drawbars between the units in the 1960's, the suffixes were displayed in very small 1 inch lettering on the side below the word BURLINGTON. Shortly after this photo date, the C suffix was applied to the F3 cab side and numberboard, and the A suffix was applied to the F7 cab. Two ABBA F3 sets were broken up this way (137 - 138), and four F7 cabs were added, producing ABA locomotives 163 - 166.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP35 986 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois, February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1964 (c/n 28981) on EMD Order 7719, it became BN 2532 and was rebuilt in March 1990 by EMD to GP39E 2914, receiving new c/n 897016-11. If I was just one more car length further east, I would have caught the waycar of the passing freight, just coming into the frame on the right. Oh well.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9985B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was the first section of Train Number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr. By this photo date, Train 11 was mostly storage mail from Chicago to Lincoln, Nebraska, with a working RPO and passenger accommodations at the rear, generally the articulated coaches from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr. The second section of this train would be mostly storage mail cars, sometimes powered by freight units.

CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B on westbound Train #11, The Nebraska Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on February 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440), became BN 9929 on March 2, 1970, sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co., Mt. Vernon, IL, January 25, 1971. Train #11 handled storage mail between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska, and usually had a five car articulated trainset from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr on the rear for passenger accommodations. There were two of these articulated trainsets (one for each direction of the Nebraska Zephyr), but if any one car needed maintenance, the entire five car set had to be removed from service, and a substitute set would be assembled from the cars in the coach pool.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad EE9 9991 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A baggage car was unusual for a Dinky (commuter train). In this case, the baggage car was added to deliver newspaper supplements to various news agencies along the Burlington. Usually this happened on a Wednesday or Thursday. One of my first employment opportunities in Naperville was as a newspaper boy, and part of my job was to stuff the Sunday newpapers with these supplements, generally the advertising pages, magazines, and the funny papers.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Of interest to perhaps only CB&Q fans, this locomotive is towing three Budd galley cars and no power car. The equipment behind the third gallery car is another train on the next track. At the time of this photo, an adapted E8 or E9 could power two galley cars with 72 volts from (at least one of) the auxiliary generators, since the only electricity needed on the gallery cars was for lighting. The air conditioning was powered by Waukeska engines mounted on each coach, and heat was provided by the locomotive's steam generator. So either this was an experiment or one of the galley cars was deadheading, just my best guess.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9988B was built in January 1956 ( c/n 20540 ), one of the last E-units delivered to the Burlington. Sometime after March 2, 1970, it became BN 9983, a number it held for about two years. During August 1972, the BN's suburban properties, including E-units and rolling stock, were transferred to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) and were leased back to the BN for operation and maintenance. The E-units were shipped of to Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding, and 9988B became 9913 in September 1973. In July 1992 the E-units were retired, and 9913 went on to serve on the Spirit of Tennessee Train as number 1996. At the end of that train's tour, the 9913 was purchased by the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida where it resides today painted as CB&Q 9913.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Baggage cars were not typically part of the consist of the Dinkys (commuter trains) on the CB&Q. Growing up in Naperville, I was once a paperboy, and had first hand knowledge of the purpose of the baggage cars. The Sunday supplements (the funnies, magazine section, and advertising inserts) were printed ahead of time, and sent to the local news agencies for insertion into the Sunday paper usually on Saturday evening. One of my jobs as a paperboy was to go to the Naperville station and collect the supplements which generally arrived on a Wednesday or Thursday. If there were a lot of supplements, usually around holidays, the Burlington would have to add a baggage car to handle the load. There was a minor problem with this, from my point of view. As the train arrived, the baggage handler would open the door and when he saw the platform, he began kicking out the bundles of supplements before the train stopped. At first I thought the guy was just a jerk, but I later found out that this was to prevent delay of the train. If the train was delayed, the conductor would have to fill out a Delay Report, which he would rather not do. If the wire binding did not hold the bundles together as they were kicked out, the paperboy (me) would have to go along the right-of-way and collect all the loose supplements.

Of course even as a 17 year old I would not be out in this weather unless there was good reason, and in this case, this train overshot the station, set off the gates at Loomis Street, was in the process of backing against traffic to load at Naperville, and gave me time to grab my camera. No doubt an embarassing situation for the Engineer.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 12, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There is a distortion in the paint on the nose running vertically to the right of the headlight and over to the grab iron. At first I thought it was a dent, then I figured out it was the shadow of a pole behind me. Also note the replacement MU plug cover to the left of the upper headlight. The CB&Q was pretty good about keeping up appearances, and this locomotive would likely visit the paint shop soon so the missing stripes can be applied.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The slow film of the day would not permit a sharp image in this lighting situation, but the train was stopped, and that gave me the opportunity to get my camera and get the shot. The signal that stopped this train was in the distance and some Engineer's could get their trains stopped before blocking Loomis Street, the only grade crossing in Naperville. The gates were down, but they would send out the head brakeman to flag the crossing and get automobile traffic around the gates and across safely.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8's 9947B and 9946A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 16, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On the left is Train #108, daily except Saturday and Sunday Dinky (commuter train) making most of the local stops between Aurora and Chicago. It departed directly from the coach yard in Aurora, stopping at Eola before arriving at Naperville at 6:53 AM. It will arrive in Chicago's Union Station at 7:46 AM. It is headed by CB&Q E8 9947B, built in September 1950 (c/n 11702) on EMD Order 2012A, became BN 9953, and was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972, becoming 346. On the right is Train #110, another daily except Saturday and Sunday Dinky, leaving the Aurora depot at 6:39 AM, its next stop is Naperville at 6:51 AM. It will stop at Lisle and Belmont. skip the rest of the stations until arriving at Cicero at 7:19 AM, stopping there and the next three stations, arriving at Union Station at 7:35 AM. The primary purpose of Train #110 was to deliver employees to the Western Electric plant in Cicero, but it also served as an express train from the far western suburbs to Chicago. It is headed by E8 9946A, built in May 1950 (c/n 9691) on EMD Order 2023A, becoming BN 9946, and was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 340.

According to the CB&Q Employees Timetable #9 for the Chicago and Aurora Divisions (Effective at 12:01AM CST, Sunday, October 25, 1964), this train did not depart from the Aurora Depot, so it departed directly from the coach yard, arriving)at its first stop, West Eola at 6:40AM, and stopping at Eola at 6:43AM.

The time is approximately 6:52AM, #108 is scheduled to stop at Naperville at 6.53AM, and #110 is due at 6:51AM, seen here departing.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9989A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 22, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1956 (c/n 20541) on EMD Order 2071A for 10 E9's, this was the Burlington's last order of passenger locomotives. This unit went on to become BN 9989, and during April 1973 was rebuilt to BN 9919, became BN-3, was retired in 1997, and now resides at the Illinois Railway Museum. It is seen here leaving town with Train #110 in tow at approximately 6:52 AM. In the background is Train #108, headed by E8 9977, just arriving to pick up passengers.
