IC 3137 at U.S Papers / Sonoco |
Description: |
This mill was once the John Strange Paper Company, organized in 1891. It was originally John Strange Pail and Tub Company, organized in 1881. Pail and Tub started to make paper in 1888. Around 1969, John Strange Paper became a part of the Menasha Corporation and was again sold off in 1981 to U.S. Papers. U.S. Papers then became a part of Sonoco in 2001. My earliest recollections of the mill start about at the time of the switch to U.S. Papers. Since 1981, the mill has shrunk in size and rail traffic has diminished. Hopefully the mill will continue to provide jobs for many more years to come. |

CN local approaches Racine St. while sorting cars at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |

CN local crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. If you ask me, we do not see enough crossing signs that say “5 Tracks,” or more, around here anymore. I imagine the railroad wishes that Appleton St. did not bisect this small yard. Up until about 30 years ago this street also bisected the similar-sized Milwaukee Road (MILW) yard that used to stand behind me. |

The dark tan brick structure rising behind the paper mill is the stage house of the Brin Theater, which will hopefully see restoration someday. I am pretty sure it is the last surviving classic theater in the Fox Cities. |

CN local services Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) from the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location here on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. |

CN local disappears behind Dura-Fibre, LLC, 352 6th St., Menasha, WI, as it shoves north via former Milwaukee Road (MILW) rails at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The facility has a spur, but it does not seem to benefit from regular rail service. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. By ’31 the Wisconsin Container Corp. had moved into the facility to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point. |

Description: |
CN local crosses a diamond as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 3 Jul. '16. There are four diamonds in close proximity where the former MILW/SOO rails intersect with the former C&NW rails on this small industrial island, which was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal (out of frame to the left) was excavated. The North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River is out of frame to the right. |

Description: |
CN local traverses what used to be the west leg of a joint wye for the MILW and SOO at Menasha, WI on 10 Jul. '16. It is no longer a wye because the east leg was removed years ago. As a result, local crews have about a 2-mile shove to serve several customers on the former MILW rails. Part of the SCA Tissue mill looms in the background. The facility used to receive rail service, but has not for quite a few years. |

Description: |
CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 28 Aug. '16. The facility in the background is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. |

C&NW Menasha, WI Freight House |
Description: |
Looking southeast at the north end of the C&NW freight house adjacent to the CN, former C&NW, Neenah-Menasha yard at Menasha, WI on 15 Oct. '16. The depot/yard office (just out of frame to the left) and this freight house were built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000 and $400,000 respectively. The contractor was Consolidated Construction Co. of Appleton. The freight house is 552’ long and 50’ wide (the first 50' of this end are only about 30' wide) and could hold 11 freight cars inside. A 3,500 sq. ft. office was included on the southeast corner at Sanford St. The turnout and track leading into it, as well as some yard tracks, were torn out in Sep. 2013. I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson. The spire of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, which stands near the south end of the freight house, can be seen rising above the trees at left. |

Description: |
A CN local approaches 6th St. as it heads south via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 11 Dec. '16. The building in the background is Dura-Fibre, LLC. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility kn ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point. The facility has a spur, but does not seem to receive rail service. |

Description: |
A CN local heading for the Plymouth Sub hammers the diamond as it crosses the former CNW mainline in Menasha. The CNW main line tack here is now an industrial spur used to service three customers. This CN local is on what was originally Milwaukee and Northern rails, later jointly used by the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line (WC). It is rounding its way through Menasha to head east to Hilbert, where it will most likely head onto the Plymouth Sub to continue its work. |
