Description:  No sign of the change in ownership of the line was visible, other than the office no longer displays the IC&E Logo - the crossings still say IC&E rather than CP and I did not see any CP locomotives (I did see a rent a wreck, IC&E, DM&E, UP, and BNSF locomotives). This was basically a precursor to the entire trip - almost no trains and bad weather (very hot and humid, lots of clouds, thunderstorms, and rain). You just have to love Iowa in August. I had much better luck taking pictures here in May two years ago.

Description:  Visible is one of the last (of what was once hundreds) of pearl button (they used to use real pearl, but since the 1950s use plastic or nylon) factories once located in Muscatine. Too bad this isn't still in full C&NW OLS Paint! This by the way was the only train in decent light I saw the entire trip, so enjoy.

Description:  or if I would have actually saw a train going north - but I'll have to keep this spot in mind for later (it turns out that the rest of this trip had lousy weather and no NB trains other than locals so maybe next trip - or maybe someone else can catch a train there in good conditions (you have a limited window of good lighting because of the arrangement of the tracks in Muscatine along the river, you pretty need a train to come exactly at the right time)

Description:  This local goes up a spur near the end of Mississippi Avenue to serve local industry - I'm not sure which factory it serves up there, but from maps it appears to extend about half a mile from the river. There is a yard along that spur at the HNI (HON Industries) laminate plant and walking I was not able to find out exactly where the spur ends (it may only go as far as 5th Street). The weather was really lousy this day.

Description:  I say this is a railroad photo - I was standing on a trail made from a former MILW yard/industrial lead (the yard was moved away from the river so it wouldn't flood so often). Anyway, these guys work with/compete (not really, Mississippi River traffic is heavily subsidized by the tax payers - in fact, one of the reasons why there is no so much flood problems on the Mississippi is that the Army Corp of Engineers cares more about having navigation and protecting navigation on the river than keeping people safe from flooding - not to mention the canalization of the river has kept it out of its normal flood plain (and of course, people have built/farmed extensively on the flood plain which is also heavily subsidized by the federal government))

Description:  Anyone who questions whether this is in fact a railroad picture should note that the park and trail I was standing on is located on a former Milwaukee Road yard and industrial lead before they were moved further from the river. Therefore, I say it counts. The river, of course, is the mighty Mississippi. The tug is the Aaron F. Barrett of the Ingram Barge Co.
