Title:  CB&Q E9 9993
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9993 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q Employees Timetable No. 10 had just gone into effect on Sunday, April 25, 1965, as had Daylight Savings Time, giving me the opportunity to capture the Dinkys in better light. I walked east about two miles from Naperville toward Lisle, and started back, photographing each Dinky as it passed by. Starting around 3:00 PM and continuing until around 7:00 PM, the Burlington would dispatch about 17 Dinkys, the California Zephyr, and the Denver Zephyr past this spot, and a few eastbound trains would also pass by, but the light was not right for eastbound photography. My goal was to photograph two westbound Dinkys side by side at 60 mph, which sometimes happened here if one or the other was slightly off schedule.

CB&Q E8 9%75
Title:  CB&Q E8 9%75
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9975 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 29, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I marked the slide as the CaliforniY Zephyr. I question that now many years later, but I was pretty good about keeping notes back then. There are a couple of possible explanations: either this is a section of the CZ or the eastbound DZ from the previous day was delayed and the Burlington made up a train from available equipment. Of course, it's always possible that I marked the slide incorrectly.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9965
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9965 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 30, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I've noted on the slide mount that this was Train #1, The Denver Zephyr. There are a lot of baggage cars, unusual for the DZ, so my guess is that this is a section of the DZ, possible the Second Section, since the class lights are not lit.

CB&Q E8 9964
Title:  CB&Q E8 9964
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9964 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 1, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9964 was built in August 1952 (c/n 16705) on EMD Order 2048A, became BN 9964 and was sold for scrap May 28, 1975 to Naporano Iron & Metal, Newark, New Jersey. There appears to be ample power on this three car Dinky. It was the practice of the CB&Q to rotate the passenger locomotives between suburban commuter trains (Dinkys) and Zephyr assignments, generally lasting about a week. At the end of the week, the E's assigned to suburban service were all in Aurora. The locomotives were generally ganged up and returned to Chicago for service and rotation into Zephyr service. On late Friday evening, as many as five or six E units would head a single gallery car back to Chicago. This is Saturday morning, and this Dinky has an extra locomotive which will likely be on a Zephyr in a day or so.

Title:  CB&Q SD24 504
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD24 504 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during May 1959 (c/n 25201) on EMD Order 5598 for 16 SD24's (#'s 500-515), the first EMD turbo-charged diesels on the Q, the only SD24's on the Burlington's roster, and eventually, the only SD24's on BN's roster. It became BN 6244 sometime after March 2, 1970 and was retired in June 1982.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E-8 #9943A westbound at Naperville, Illinois, May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I lived along the Burlington's triple track main line during 1962-1966 in Naperville and I photographed a few trains during that time. One of the memories I have was the shuffle of the E-units between Aurora and Chicago. On Friday evening, after their assigned runs, the commuter E's would be run back to Chicago for service/rotation, and on Sunday evening, replacements would be run back out to Aurora for Monday morning rush hour trains. The CB&Q rotated their E-units between Zephyr assignments and commuter service. The commuter service (in CB&Q parlance, the commuter service trains were known as Dinkys) was westbound from Chicago to Aurora in the evening, so at the end of Friday, the E's in Aurora were run back to the Zephyr Pit at 14th St. in Chicago on the next eastbound Dinky, to be serviced/inspected and placed in Zephyr service, and the locos coming off Zephyr service would be assigned to Dinkys. One of the chores of the rotation would be the replacement of brake shoes, and this photo illustrates the E's showing off their new shoes as they were run back west to Aurora for the Monday morning rush hour. The train behind this one would have about 5 E's and one coach. All (except the coach) would have blazing brake shoes as the approached the stop at the Naperville station (behind me in this photo). This usually happened late in the evening. I have a photo of this event, but it is just brake shoe glow. I imagine the engineer had an easy time with the schedule, I believe the loco's were all MU'd, so he probably had good acceleration.

CB&Q 9050
Title:  CB&Q 9050
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Detector 9050 and Detector Car 2 westbound at River Road west of Naperville, Illinois on May 17, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #39, "CB&Q 2/9050 was a rather eclectic pair, as were all the AAR-design cars built in the late 1940's as a result of design work and testing done at Aurora (Illinois). The undercarrages of both units - tow car and detector car - were constructed by Buda to AAR specifications, and a 150 horsepower Buda diesel engine powered the 9050. The Fuller Company provided the transmission for the mechanical drive. Carbodies for both units were fabricated to AAR specs by Jacob Press & Company of Chicago. The detection instrumentation and electrical apparatus were designed by the AAR's Henry Keevil. All the components were assembled at the Aurora shops; the two-car set was painted and placed in service in July 1948. In addition to the Q, the GN and NP (which ordered identical sets), nearly identical tow car/detector car sets were assembled at Aurora for the Milwaukee Road, Rock Island, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific.

Title:  CB&Q F7 168C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 168C eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 22, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9699) on EMD Order 3058A and traded in by BN for a SD45 in August 1970, never receiving a BN road number. It was delivered as the rear cab of F7 semi-permenantly coupled A/B/A set 168, one of three pure A/B/A F7 sets on the CB&Q. Although the suffix letters were assigned (and painted in one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON), they never appeared in the numberboard or on the nose until the A/B/A sets were broken up in the 1960's, and couplers replaced the drawbars.

Built during March 1950 (c/n 9684), it became BN 9935 on March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) August 18, 1972 and leased back to the BN. During February 1974, it was rebuilt as E9Am 9900 by Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho. It was named (in 1978) "Don H. King" and was leased to the BN under contract with the RTA (still owned by the WSMTD) until retired in January 1993. I do not know its final disposition.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9975
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9975 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 23, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is Extra 9975 West (the class lights are lit), a Bicycle Special. The first five cars are former Troop Kitchen cars, built by American Car & Foundry during World War II to provide meals on troop trains. The CB&Q purchased 300 of these cars after the war and sent them through the Havelock, Nebraska shops for conversion to express service. Because these cars had come from U. S. Army surplus, they were known as 'Jeeps' on the CB&Q. The flyer I have indicates this train departed Union Station at 9:05AM Central Daylight Time, stopped at Hinsdale and Aurora, and arrived at Ottawa (Illinois) at 11:30AM. Bicycles were checked and carried in the Jeeps. The fare was $6.10 for adults, $4.25 for kids. The destination was Buffalo Rock State Park, near Ottawa. It was a busy Sunday on the Q, as I also have a flyer for a steam excursion powered by 2-8-2 4960 to Ottawa an hour behind this train. This train used bi-level suburban commuter coaches, the steam trip offered air-conditioned coaches (heavyweights), a baggage car for tape recording fans and an open gondola. The fare for the steam trip was $7.50.

The Western Star arrived at Minneapolis early enough to allow passengers to transfer to CB&Q's Train #24, the Afternoon Zephyr, which departed Minneapolis at 2:50 PM CST, for a quicker arrival in Chicago at 9:55 PM CST, but there was not enough time to allow transfer of the rolling stock, which arrived on this train the next morning at 6:40 AM CST. The Mainstreeter's passengers were not as fortunate, and arrived on this train. This combined operation began in 1955 and ended in 1970.

Title:  CB&Q E9 9987A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive had been recently returned to service after wreck repairs, and I believe the whiskers ( nose stripes ) were a darker shade of red that usual.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 251
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 251 and the crew of the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on June 7, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The only name I know for sure is the Conductor, Mr. John Sylogye, the gentleman with the hat and pipe. However, Bob Campbell adds: Chuck - the brakeman in the black shirt is Jim Eddy; don't know the guy on the footboard. The Engineer is definitely NOT old Fred Huntley (the regular Engineer on this train).

Title:  CB&Q GP30 971
Description:  CB&Q GP30 971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois, June 7, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Judging by the shadows, it appears to be around Noon. That being the case, according to CB&Q Employees Timetable #10, this is Train #88, the daily Minnesota and Dakota Time Freight, due in Cicero at 12:30 PM CST. The trailing GP20 is 909, I couldn't make out the last GP20's number.

CB&Q E8 9976
Title:  CB&Q E8 9976
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9976 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 7, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1953 (c/n 18318) on EMD Order 2059A for eight E8's (#'s 9970-9977), became BN 9976 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District on April 1, 1977, and was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho, swapping out it's twin 12-cylinder Model 567B prime movers for 645E's and changing out it's twin steam generators for Detroit Diesel powered HEP units. It appears this unit went on to a brief career as MARC 68, and now resides at the Illinois Railway Museum, Union, Illinois. In the background is Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr. Assuming everyone is on time, 9976 is on Train #109, due in Naperville at 11:32AM, #11 is due at Aurora at 11:37AM.

The standing freight cars on the left of 968's train belong to the East End Way Freight who's power was switching Moser Lumber behind me.

CB&Q E8 9941A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9941A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9941A eastbound on Train #30 at Naperville, Illinois, June 9, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Train #30 was the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska, spelled backwards) Zephyr, the daily Lincoln to Chicago overnight Zephyr which also handled mail, not to be confused with the CB&Q-C&S Train #30, the 'Nightcrawler', a daily Denver to Billings passenger train. It's possible this train also contains parts of Train #56, the American Royal Zephyr, which ran between Saint Joseph-Kansas City, Missouri and Chicago. According to the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, both trains arrived in Galesburg at slightly different times, but both departed at 4:45 AM CST, with both trains due to arrive at Chicago Union Station at 7:50 AM CST. There is a schedule in the Employees Timetable #10 for #30 between Galesburg and Chicago, but none for #56, suggesting that the trains were combined.

Note the new gallery car cut in third car back. The CB&Q was in the process of receiving new bi-level commuter coaches from Budd around this time, including six with control cabs to initiate push-pull service on the Chicago-Aurora commuter line. In order to avoid Illinois state sales tax, the new cars were routed from the builder to Lincoln, Nebraska, weighed, and returned to Chicago on the next available train.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9924B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy E7 9924B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 11, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1945 (c/n 2955) on EMD Order E646A and was sold for scrap in February 1968. I marked the slide as the North Coast Limited (NCL). I believe that is in error. I've consulted the June 1965 copy of the Official Guide, which states that Train# 26, the NCL was due at Aurora (10 miles west from this point) at 1:15 PM, and it it early morning judging by the lighting, and the headight in the left background, which would be the East End Way Freight, also a morning train in Naperville. However, the Mainstreeter, Train #48, was due at Aurora at 5:45 AM, and if it was running late, it would fit into this photo quite well. Either way, there was Northern Pacific passenger equipment in this train.
