CB&Q E7 9926A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9926A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is somewhat unusual for two reasons: The CB&Q did not typically use E7's on Dinkys (commuter trains) except when they were due for their monthy inspections, and the power car (the first coach, which contained a diesel powered electric generator), is on the east end. The usual arrangement was to place the power car at the west end of the train to keep the noise and fumes away from the passengers as they boarded at Union Station.

GN A28
Title:  GN A28
Description:  Great Northern Railway A28 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I marked the slide as CB&Q Train #48, the Blackhawk, which was typically combined with NP's Mainstreeter train. On this date there may have been enough business for the railroad to run two separate trains. According to the 1975 Burlington Northern Annual (published by Motive Power Services), Great Northern car A28 (4th) was built in 1947 by Pullman-Standard as a business car, renumbered in 1969 to A4 (3rd), became BN A4 (3rd) in 1970, and was named Kootenai River in 1971.

CB&Q E7 9924B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9924B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9924B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1945 (c/n 2955), sold for scrap in February 1968, it is seen here on an eastbound Dinky. I shot this same locomotive the previous day (Friday) heading east on a passenger train from the Twin Cities. That being the case, I surmise that 9924B was serviced, turned, and sent out to Aurora on a Dinky (commuter train). June 12 was a Saturday, and the Burlington would run its E units back to Chicago during the weekend lull. They would be serviced and rotated into Zephyr service and the E's that were in Zephyr service would be assigned to suburban service. Generally, on Friday evening, the extra E's in Aurora would be ganged up (4-5 per train) on a single car Dinky for the return to Chicago, but sometimes on Saturday there would be a few stragglers left to send back, as seen here. This locomotive was among the first group of E7's acquired by the CB&Q, and were the "Phase 1" design with small numberboards and retractable front couplers. Part of the retractable coupler mechanizm included the buffer plate, the item above the coupler allowing footing when walking between coupled locomotives. There was air-operated apparatus in the nose of the early E7's that extended the coupler and buffer plate, or retracted same, as needed. It soon became apparent that simply leaving the coupler and buffer plate in the extended position simplified maintenance.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9970
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9970 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I marked the slide mount as Train Number 30, the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska spelled backwards) Zephyr, a daily train departing Lincoln at 9:00 PM and arriving in Chicago at 7:50 AM. On this photo date, the train includes a couple of new Budd gallery coaches in the consist at the head end. The cars were delivered to the CB&Q at Lincoln to avoid Illinois sales tax, and returned to Chicago for revenue service in this manner.

CB&Q E9 9987B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9987B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 15, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1955 (c/n 20538) on EMD Order 2071 (the last order for CB&Q E-units), it became BN 9982, then 9912, retired in July 1992, and may now be located in Nashville, Tennessee on the Nashville & Eastern. It is seen here on an eastbound Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train), and the first car behind the locomotive is a new cab control car. The Burlington's first revenue push-pull train ran only four days earlier, and the crews were still in training, so for a bit of time, the cab control cars were pulled eastbound. Later, the cab control cars were all on the eastbound end, and the locomotives were on the westbound end. This kept the noise and diesel exhaust at the far end of Union Station, away from the boarding and departing passengers.

CB&Q E9 9986B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9986B
Description:  CB&Q E9 9986B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 18, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is speculation: I believe this is eastbound Train #30, departing Aurora 7:01 AM, due in Chicago 7:50 AM. It was known as the Ak-Sar-Ben Zephyr, which is Nebraska spelled backward. It left Lincoln, Nebraska at 9:00 PM. About a half dozen cars back is a new suburban bi-level coach, likely being ferried from Lincoln to Chicago for assignment to the suburban department. As I understand it, the CB&Q received new deliveries in Lincoln to avoid paying Illinois sales tax. I will also speculate that this was not the lead locomotive when this train departed Lincoln, based on the open MU plug access door to the left of the upper headlight, and the attached MU hoses. Generally, the CB&Q removed the MU hoses from the lead locomotive because there was no provision to retain them to prevent them from flying around and banging against the pilot, not only creating noise, but also chipping the paint.

CB&Q E7 9930A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9930A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9930A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 22, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4499) on EMD Order E792A for a total of 11 E7's on this order, it became BN 9930 after March 2, 1970 and was traded to EMD for an order of SD45's on September 2, 1970. This unit was equipped with two Vapor Clarkson CFK 4225 steam generators mounted side by side at the rear of the unit, the exhaust stack of one can be seen as the rectangular shape on the roof. Beginning with units 9925A and B, this became the standard on CB&Q passenger power. It is seen here with an eastbound Dinky (commuter train) in tow, with the power car on the east end of the train. Usually, the power cars were at the west end of all the Dinkys.

CB&Q E7 9926A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9926A westbound with Train #23, The Afternoon Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q had two Zephyrs in each direction between Chicago and Minneapolis - Saint Paul, both were known as the Twin Cities Zephyrs. To distinguish between the two, the AM train was called The Morning Zephyr, the PM train was known as The Afternoon Zephyr. The Afternoon Zephyr departed Chicago at 2:30 PM CST (3:30 locally, DST), and arrived in Minneapolis at 9:50 PM CST. It would depart Minneapolis the next moring at 7:45 AM as Train #22, The Morning Zephyr, arriving in Chicago at 2:40 PM. This photo also illustrates the difference in carbody panels. Some, but not all, of CB&Q's EMD E-units were retro-fitted with stainless steel panels. The lead locomotive has the as-delivered painted (the color was known as Aluminum) panels, and the trailing unit has been fitted with replacement stainless steel panels.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440) on EMD Order E792A, became BN 9929 and was sold for scrap January 25, 1971. It is seen here heading Train #21, The Morning Zephyr, through Naperville on its way to the Twin Cities. On this day, the observation car is coupled to the baggage car, the purpose is to save switching charges in Saint Paul by cutting off the locomotivces and baggage car at the station, leaving the train in the station, turning and servicing the locomotives (and baggage car) and returning to the station to couple back onto the waiting train. According to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide, This train arrived in Minneapolis at 2:50 PM CST, and returned as Train 24, the Afternoon Zephyr, departing Minneapolis at 2:50 PM. I'm not sure how they pulled that off.

CB&Q E7 9929A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9929A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929A westbound on Train #21, The Morning Zephyr (aka Twin Cities Zephyr) a little east of Naperville, Illinois, June 24, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q E7's were delivered with silver (actually, the paint color was called Aluminum) side panels. Some, not all, of the E7's were retrofitted with stainless steel side panels when they were shopped. This photo shows two E7's that received stainless steel panels. The cab and roof remained painted. And here's a note about this particular E7 from Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q Engineer:

An engine used to show up at Aurora Roundhouse for inspection purposes and be gone for 32 days again. This engine caused me more headaches than ALL of the E8's and E9's combined !! The headache I speak of was a CLINICAL headache, not a metaphorical headache. The source of this chronic and sometimes debilitating condition was none other than Miss 9929A herself, dang her !! All E8's and 9's had their control switches neatly arrayed on a panel immediately to the left of, and slightly lower than, the control stand. These switches energized the control circuits, (e.g. fuel pump, generator field, headlight) and such other appurtenances as the Engineer may find useful. The E7's, however, like F units, had a row of these switches just above the Engineer's window. So, after 32 days of hostling 8's and 9's you kinda have a tendency to forget these little nuances of design. Climb up on an engine, go to lean out the window to get a sign from the Roundhouse Helper and BAM !!!!,, 9929A. Every month I'd have a serier of from two to three red welts on my forehead. OUCH !!!!!!!!!

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B westbound on Train #17, The California Zephyr, Naperville, Illinois, June 24, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Business is a little better than usual, there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome coach. This locomotive was built in April 1950 (c/n 9686) on EMD Order 2012A, became BN 9936, and was sold for scrap to Precision National in June 1981. It is seen here 27 miles from Union Station in Chicago, half way between Lisle and Naperville, about a half hour into its overnight journey to Denver, where the CB&Q power will be replaced with D&RGW power. The CZ will continue through the Rocky Mountains arriving at Salt Lake City, Utah, where the D&RGW power will be replaced by WP power for the final leg of the journey to Oakland, California, 2525 miles from its starting point. Two days from this photo date, this same locomotive will return to Chicago leading Train #10, The Denver Zephyr.

As you can see, I was learning to pan with the train, resulting in a clear locomotive front, but a blurred train. I'll fix that in later photos, but unfortunate on this photo date. Three locomotives on the Twin meant extra cars were in the consist.

CB&Q E7 9926B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926B
Description:  CB&Q E7 9926B westbound on Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr at Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4434) on EMD Order E792A, became BN 9926 on March 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision June 14, 1971. Although some of the E7's were retro-fitted with stainless steel side panels, records indicate this unit never received them. It is seen here with the as-delivered side panels painted aluminum. This unit did have the louvered door behind the cab door replaced with a sheet metal door. On some E7's this louvered door was found to be unnecessary, although the door access was still used to change out the main air reservoirs, which were located immediately behind the cab bulkhead.

CB&Q E7 9932B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9932B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9932B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6503) on EMD Order E1006A, it became BN 9913 and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co (after July, 1971, Precision National) on November 4, 1970. It is seen here heading a section of Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, east toward Chicago, about 28 miles from this point. I'm not sure, but this might be the second section of Number 10, since the class lights are not lit. The first car behind the motors (CB&Q term for locomotives) is a heavyweight Pullman, one of several Pullman sleepers purchased by the Burlington during 1948. Normally, heavyweight cars were not used on the Denver Zephyr, and this one was pressed into service as a dormitory car for the train crew (porters and dining car crew).

Title:  CB&Q GP7 206
Description:  CB&Q GP7 206 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 19, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I suppose your eye is drawn to the Milwaukee Road bulkhead flatcar, so for the record it is MILW 67118, first car in the Burlington's East End Way Freight, which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. This locomotive was built in September 1951 (c/n 13175) on EMD Order 5072, became BN 1562, and was retired in October 1982.

Title:  CB&Q NW2 9223
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9223 on the eastbound East End Way Freight, switching at Naperville, Illinois on July 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was equipped with a 6Vapor standby heater located in an enclosure in front of the Engineer's forward window. The intention was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather and the heater would heat and circulate the cooling water. It was seldom, if ever, used.

CB&Q E8 9942A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9942A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1950 (c/n 9683) on EMD Order 2012A, it became BN 9942 (after 3/2/1970), became Amtrak 337 (after 8/1/1972), and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. It is seen here as the rear unit of a Friday evening eastbound push-pull Dinky. All the locomotives were MU'ed together, so that's at least 9000 horsepower pushing a single coach. After the rush hour trains arrived in Aurora, the Burlington needed to get the locomotives back to Chicago for service and rotation into Zephyr service. This is likely Train #154, daily passenger due out of Aurora at 6:15 PM and arriving at Union Station at 7:15 PM. The process would be reversed on Sunday evening with locomotives off Zephyr service run out to Aurora on a single car Dinky for Monday morning rush hour. This situation would have been a bit different only a couple of months earlier. The CB&Q had just received gallery cab cars from Budd and had only recently started push-pull service. The previous procedure was to turn all the locomotives (cabs facing east) and head them back to Chicago pulling a single coach.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1956 (c/n 20540) on EMD Order 2071A, this was one of ten E9's (#'s 9985A,B - 9989A,B) ordered by the CB&Q in 1955, which turned out to be the Q's last order of E-units. This unit became BN 9983, was rebuilt to E9Am 9913, was retired in 1992, and moved on to other careers.

It is seen here on what may be Train #229, a Saturday and Sunday Only Every Stop train, bringing a westbound two car Dinky into Naperville at around 7:25 PM on a Sunday evening with the help of two more E's, and leaving a trail of fresh brake shoe smoke. The practice at the time was to run the E's back to Chicago after rush hour on Friday evening, service and rotate them into Zephyr service, take the E's in Zephyr service and rotate them into suburban service, and on Sunday evening run the E's out to Aurora for Monday morning's rush hour. This particular unit was reputed to have taken a two car Dinky up to 100 mph after leaving Naperville before ducking under the EJ&E bridge at Eola, a distance of roughly five miles. This, of course, was a bit over the 75 mph speed limit in that territory. Chasing the Dinky into town this day is a freight, seen in the smoky background.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9940A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9940A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This photo illustrateq a transitional period in CB&Q powered suburban trains. If only two Budd bi-level coaches were on the assigned train, a tap was made to the 72 volt Auxiliary Generators on modified E-units amd the power car (the car behind the locomotive) could be omitted. The lights and auxiliary controls on the Budd cars were electrically powered, the heat was from locomotive-supplied steam, and the air-conditioning was by Wakesha engines powered by propane.

CB&Q F7 164A
Title:  CB&Q F7 164A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 164A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 28, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I was fortunate to be able to read the model plate on the side of the locomotive, identifying it as an F7. Otherwise, I could not tell the difference between a Phase IV F3 and a Phase I F7, since EMD utilized the same carbody for both models. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10:

In May 1950, the CB&Q proper acquired its only F7's - 10 A's and three B's. These units had a 36 inch diameter dynamic brake fan ahead of the four radiator fans, thus differentiating them from the Phase IV F3's. Nine of the F7's were numbered as three-unit drawbar-coupled A/B/A sets 167-169, while the other four A's were 163A through 166A. With the delivery of the F7's, two of the previously delivered four-unit F3 sets (137A-D and 138A-D) were broken up and reassembled with the remaining single F7 A-units to make up three-unit F3-A/F3-B/F7-A sets 163 through 166. The renumbering went as follows: 137A became 163C, 137B became 163B, 137C became 164B, 137D became 164C, 138A became 165C, 138B became 165B, 138C became 166B, 138D became 166C. The units in these F3-7 sets matched well, the only outwardly visible difference between the A-units being in the rooftop dynamic brakes. From the ground, the 163-166 sets appeared identical the pure F7 sets 167-169. Later, most of them were split into separate units, coupler equipped at both ends. The three-unit A/B/A sets were not split up until well into the 1960's, with the 167 trio finally being broken up into individual units late in 1965. Suffix letters had been assigned to the locomotives for maintenance purposes, but only appeared in small 1 inch lettering on the side below the word BURLINGTON, until the locomotives were broken up and equipped with couplers at both ends.

This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 8917) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9922 sometime after Mach 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering June 14, 1971. It was delivered with Aluminum painted side panels, and during a shopping, the painted panels were replaced with stainless steel laminate panels. Note that the trailing E7 has the original painted side panels. It was equipped with two steam generators. This is an extreme example of panning (moving the camera) to capture the moving subject. Unfortunately, everything else is blurred.
