CB&Q E9 9994
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9994 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is fortunate I had the presence of mind to mark the slide as "Girl Scout Special". I certainly would not have recalled that detail 40 years later. This locomotive was built in August 1954 (c/n 19633) on EMD Order 2065, became BN 9994 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger, sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District August 18, 1972, was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in May 1973, returning as 9924 and leased to the BN for operation.

CB&Q The Round-Up
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Office Car, named THE ROUND-UP, eastbound on Train #10, the Denver Zephyr at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as solarium lounge observation 570 for the Spokane Portland & Seattle by Barney & Smith in 1915, it was purchased in 1934 by the CB&Q and numbered 220 and named Mississippi. In 1936, it was rebuilt as a solarium parlor for use on subsidiary Colorado & Southern's train 31-32, the Zephyr Connection, and on the left side it was named Cheyenne, and on the right side it was named Denver. During WWII it was converted to a chair car and numbered 4811. During February 1946, it was converted back to its original configuration and name/number (220-Mississippi). Two months later, at this very spot, headed in the opposite direction, it was involved in a disasterous collision between the Advance Flyer and the Exposition Flyer. It was removed to the shops in Aurora, where it sat derelict for several years until it was pulled into the shops and sheathed in stainless steel for conversion to a business car. It emerged from the shops during January 1953 still a heavyweight car (201,900 pounds), and named The Round-Up. It became the BN The Round-Up, and was sold to the Canadian National April 1972. It was sold by the CN to Bombardier Ltd., and re-sold to Ron Salisbury, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

CB&Q F3 132A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There are a couple of gentlemen on the bridge observing, and here's what transpired as best I remember: My friend, Ed DeRouin, explained to me that this was a local freight, and if there was a 'hot' car, they would set it out at Naperville, to be picked up by the East End Way Freight, and delivered to the customer, avoiding the usual setout at Eola, and adding a day to the delivery. The head-end brakeman is conferring with the crew, and they will set out a boxcar of newsprint paper (typically in a CP boxcar), that will be picked up and delivered to the newspaper printer in Downers Grove. However, there are some logistics to work out. This train has stopped short of Loomis Street, the only level crossing in Naperville, and will cut off here so as not to block the crossing. Unfortunately, the train has already activated the automatic crossing gates, and vehicular traffic has been stopped by the lowered gates. The switch to the siding is on the other side of Loomis Street, so someone will have to flag the crossing while the setout takes place. My guess is that the Fireman is getting drafted into crossing protection duty.

CB&Q F3 132A
Description:
CB&Q F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built on EMD Order E957 during November 1948 (c/n 7050), it was traded as credit for a GP40 in January 1967. Order E957 was for 17 A/B/B/A F3 sets, and the delivery spanned three Phases of F3 production. Sets 122-125, delivered in April 1948 were Phase II F3's equipped with the new 36 inch unshrouded cooling fans. Sets 126-129 (Phase III) had louvers between the side porthole windows and lacked the "chicken wire". Sets 130-138 introduced the stainless steel Farr Air grills at the top side of the carbody, making the Phase IV F3's look much like a Phase I F7, except for the rectangular openings on the roof for the dynamic brakes instead of a 36 inch fan.

D&RGW GP30 3025
Description:
D&RGW GP30 3025 westbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on August 5, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I heard a horn unlike those on the CB&Q, so I ran into the house to get my camera, by the time I got back, the train was passing through and this is the best I could get. Number 3025 was built in February 1963 (c/n 28054) on EMD Order 7640 and was destroyed at Byers Canyon, August 7, 1982. This was part of a pooled power arrangement the CB&Q and D&RGW had in the 1960's.

CB&Q GP35 981
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP35 981 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1963 (c/n 28303) on EMD Order 7668 which originally was an order for GP30's, instead four GP35's were deliverd to the CB&Q. Apparently, EMD was in a hurry to get a 2500 horsepower locomotive in the field to compete with GE's U25B, and produced an extra 250 hp by cranking up the RPM's of the Model 567D3A prime mover. This particular GP35 became BN 2527 and was retired in March 1987.

AT&SF F7 306
Description:
AT&SF F7 306 westbound on the CB&Q at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, I was done shooting photos for the day and was walking home on the street next to the tracks when I heard a horn unlike any on CB&Q locomotives, so I ran over the the tracks and this is what I got. Apparently, there was a problem on the AT&SF somewhere between Chicago and Galesburg, which is likely where this train joined home rails again. Trains of the AT&SF. CRI&P, C&NW and CMStP&P would use the CB&Q tracks to get around a problem on their own rails. And the CB&Q would use a neighbor's rails if there was a problem on its own rails. This locomotive is the second 306, the first 306 (c/n 9607), was renumbered in November 1952 to 325L, later becoming CF7 2419. Second 306 was built in December 1952 (c/n 17434) on EMD Order 6365A, leased to Amtrak between 1971 and 1973, renumbered to 333L and put into freight service, rebuilt in August 1977 to CF7 2443.

CB&Q F3 162
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162, eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built under EMD order E1007 in June 1948. It was delivered as a drawbar-connected A/B/A set. The individual units were given suffix letters, barely visible in one inch letters painted on the sides below the word BURLINGTON. Sometime after this photo, but before the end of the year, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and suffix letters were applied to the sides and numberboards. The lead unit pictured could be either 162A or 162C.

CB&Q F7 163A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 163A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9692) on EMD Order 3021, was wrecked at Tecumseh, Nebraska on July 5, 1968, and traded as credit on an order for SD45's in February 1969. It is seen here westbound on Track 3 on what, for a few minutes, was a very busy piece of railroad. Normally, Track 3 was for eastbound moves, although it was signalled for movement in either direction. When the gates started ringing, I grabbed my camera and shot the arriving Dinky (commuter train), which according to the CB&Q Employees Timetable #10 (effective April 25, 1965) was Train #111, on Track 1, the usual westbound track. The gates did not go up after the Dinky, and I saw two approaching headlights. The next train was westbound #25, the North Coast Limited, on Track 2. As #25 was passing, F7 163A passed by on Track 3. Most likely this freight will cross over behind #25 at Eola, about 5 or 6 miles further west. It certainly was an interesting couple of minutes.

CB&Q E9 9990
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9990 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The days of the single level green commuter coaches (class PA-14) are numbered. Two new bi-level gallery cars are at the back of this train, and as deliveries continue from Budd, the PA-14's will all be retired by the end of the 1960's. Some will continue to survive in MOW service into the BN era.

Description:
CB&Q GP7 204 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on September 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, this train snuck up on me. I shot a passing westbound and spun around to catch this train. I had to make a choice, shoot the westbound first or shoot the eastbound. I chose westbound first and this resulted in a good shot of the toilet discharge pipe behind the steps of 204. Looks to me like the Q combined two trains for the final move to Chicago.

CB&Q E7 9935A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9935A eastbound on Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on September 12, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 8490), it became BN 9919 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. It is seen leading the Denver Zephyr east, about 28 miles left on the train's 1034 mile overnight journey. It was unusual for the CB&Q to leave the MU hatch open and the MU hoses in place on the front of the lead locomotive, suggesting that perhaps this was not the lead locomotive when it left Denver the previous day. One might speculate that perhaps the lead locomotive had a mechanical failure, or perhaps encountered a foreign object somewhere during the trip and was removed, and there was not sufficient time for the terminal crew to close the hatch and remove the hoses.

CB&Q F7 167A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 167A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on October 9, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1950 (c/n 9696) on EMD Order 3058A, this was one of six F7A's on this order, one of only 10 F7A's purchased by the CB&Q. The CB&Q also purchased three F7B's (EMD Order 3058B) to make up three pure F7 A-B-A drawbar-connected locomotives 167-169. During the 1960's, the F7 sets were broken up, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and suffix letters were added to the numberboards and painted on the nose. This particular locomotive set received this modification sometime between October 1964 and October 1965. I'm not sure of the exact date the suffix letter was added, but I previously photographed this locomotive without suffix letters a year before this photo date.

CB&Q E7 9917B
Description:
CB&Q E-7 9917B eastbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was wrecked at south Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 15, 1966, I have no further information. This locomotive displays mis-matched MU plug covers. Looking at the triangular shapes that are painted on either side of the upper headlight, you will notice that the one on the engineer's side has a black striped middle section. This is probably a replacement cover removed from a locomotive painted in the as-delivered black Whisker paint scheme. When delivered, the E series locomotives were painted with black where the red is, on the front. The Burlington Route logo below the lower headlight was as you see it here, and the side stripes were red. It also displays lower than usual E-7 stainless steel model plates, seen here below the sand filler on the cab, but usually located above the sand filler. Trailing the 9917B is another E-7 from the second phase design from Electro-Motive, a SD-24 and a GP-20. All the locomotives are facing forward, or running elephant style, a Burlington preference, which I have yet to determine a reason for. It was unusual for the CB&Q to mix its freight and passenger motive power. Here's a little CB&Q trivia: the reason for those triangular shapes painted on either side of the upper headlight was to mimic the air intakes of the original Pioneer Zephyr design. All CB&Q E units wore that design. Around the time of the Burlington Northern merger, it was dropped. Although it looks like a freight train, I believe it belongs in the passenger train category. It appears in the CB&Q Chicago & Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #11, effective Sunday October 31, 1965, as a first class train. Also published by the Burlington Route Historical Society in Zephyr #53 was a re-print of Timetable #10, which had the same listing. Due out of Aurora at 1:29 AM, it has two scheduled stops between Aurora and Chicago: Congress Park at 2:15 AM, and Cicero at 2:25 AM, before its arrival in Chicago at 3:25 AM. Note that the schedule was a little padded to cover setouts at Congress Park (Meat) and Cicero (Trailer On Flat Car - TOFC). I contacted Ed DeRouin of Pixels Publishing (he has written or published several articles and books with CB&Q content) to figure out what I had photographed, and here's his answer: You photographed a late running Number 14, which was a Lincoln - Chicago train scheduled to move express, later meat and packing house products in reefers and TOFC, with a 3:25 a.m arrival in Chicago. Engineers I spoke with decades ago shared that often the last cars were set out at Cicero and the motors ran light to 14th Street. This train carried no passengers. Although some storage mail was moved via 14, no RPO was operated. Since most mail and express was westbound, this train was also used to bring empty storage cars east. It looks like they're smoking it up, and I'll bet they are. About 12 miles behind, Number 14 dropped down to about 20 mph to weave through the Aurora Depot and pass through downtown Aurora on elevated track, then at restricted speed to Eola Yard, then throttle up a bit, there's a grade crossing at East Eola, another a couple miles down at River Road, one more, at Loomis Street (just behind me in this photo), then ten miles or so of no grade crossings. There was a lot of fast running between Naperville and Downers Grove, so my guess, he's in Run 8. One can only imagine the consternation of the Dispatcher finding this train in his morning rush hour lineup. Number 14 is on the middle track of a three track main and will have to cross over in front of suburban rush hour trains to do the setout at Congress Park. Bad plan probably, and if it were me, I guess I'd get it off the railroad as fast as I could; run it into Cicero yard, then send a switcher back with the Congress Park setout, about a five mile reverse move.

B&O Business Car 98
Description:
Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Business Car 98 westbound on the rear of a CB&Q steam fan trip at Naperville, Illinois, October 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was on a few of the steam excursions led by 4960. It is seen here on a round trip to Streator, departing Chicago at 9:00 AM DST, leaving Aurora at 10:10 AM, returning to Chicago at 6:30 PM. It was sponsored by the Illini Railroad Club, the fare was $7.50. A nice place to be sitting, in my opinion. The following is from the B&OHS publication, The Sentinel (Vol. 33, No. 2): Built by Pullman and delivered to the B&O on November 15, 1917 to Plan 3334 in Lot 4467 as the 99A, the car was quickly renumbered to 98 in 1918. A 1940 record shows the car assigned to F. G. Hoskins, general manager in Baltimore, and a 1958 record shows the car assigned to W. R. Galloway, general manager of the central region in Pittsburgh. In 1964 the car was back in Baltimore assigned to John Edwards, general manager Eastern Region. In 1955, the six-wheel trucks under the 98 were converted to roller bearing trucks at a cost of $5,205 (try to do that today for that amount of money). Those trucks are still under the car. Number 98 was sold in 1965 to Ralph Atlass of the Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The car was left in Baltimore & Ohio paint, according to several pictures of it running on western railroads. Later an individual in Chattanooga, Tennessee, purchased the car and donated it to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga. The then-president of the TVRM named the car Eden Isle, but retained the number 98. The car remains at TVRM and is used by the museum for charters over its six-mile railroad from Grand Junction Station to East Chattanooga Station and Charters range from $600 to $1600 depending on the trip. While the interior of the car is much the way it was in B&O service, the outside is now painted in an attractive maroon with gold lettering and striping. In their history of the 98, the TVRM states the car was assigned to an executive vice president of the Baltimore and Ohio and that could explain its low number, since cars with numbers 97 to 100 were normally assigned to top executives. They also show the car being rebuilt by the railroad in 1935, but that has not been verified. That could have been when air conditioning was added to the car. It remains a mystery why the car was first numbered 99A. Perhaps it was intended to back up Daniel Willard’s car 99, since he was known to travel the railroad extensively in his position as president. It was long before Universal Machine Language Equipment Register requirements that there be no alphas in the number field. The 99A number appears to have been assigned to the car for less than a year.

CB&Q F3 132A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on October 28, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1948 (c/n 7050) on EMD Order E-957 as the lead motor (as the CB&Q called their individual locomotives) of the four unit F3 set 132A-B-C-D. Delivered with drawbars and considered a single locomotive, it is termed a Phase IV F3, with the carbody configuration of a Phase I F7, except for the dynamic brake openings on the roof, which are rectangular openings instead of a 36" fan (on the F7). By the 1960's, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and the F's were mixed freely to form the horsepower required for the job they were assigned. This particular motor was traded in on an order of GP40's in January 1967. No CB&Q F-units made it to the BN merger.

This locomotive was built in September 1950 (c/n 11704) on EMD Order 2023A, became BN 9954 sometime after March 2, 1970, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 347, was retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron and Metal Company, Newark, New Jersey. The E8's in this order were equipped with fabricated grills covering the carbody air intakes (just below the roof and above the porthole windows), and painted side panels. Many CB&Q E7's and E8's were retro-fitted with stainless steel panels during shopping. This particular E8 retained its painted panels to the end.

This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35199), became BN 5429, and was retired in July 1981. The CGI (Chicaago Grand Island) was an expedited freight train between Cicero, Illinois and Grand Island, Nebraska, and featured a pool of locomotives from the CB&Q and UP. It started in the late GP9 era (about 1960) and lasted (I believe) to the BN merger in 1970.

This locomotive was built September 1951 (c/n 14690), became BN 1582, and was retired September 1983. It may appear there is dirt in the upper left of this photo, but those are pigeons who took to the air upon hearing a hard coupling. They will make a circle and land back on their home, the top of the Boecker grain elevator in the background. Also pictured is waycar (CB&Q term for caboose) 14351, which for the four years I photographed trains in Naperville was the regularly assigned waycar to the East End Way Freight. It was chalked "E END" on the cupola end by the curved grab iron. It was built at the Aurora Shops in July 1906, became BN 11087, and was retired and donated in January 1971. A note on the donation in the book, Waycars Of The Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR reads: 'Car auctioned off by television station WTTW, Chicago, IL, and sold to a private individual in Prospect Heights, IL on May 1, 1977'. I have no further info at this time.
