Straight shot
Title:  Straight shot
Description:  The LIRR Main Line is straight as an arrow for 17 miles from Jamaica to Hicksville. There are not many crossings in this stretch, and most of those are in Mineola. West of Mineola, there are four. The first is Herricks Rd, where we see this westbound Port Jefferson train approaching behind an MP 15 power pack. Herricks Road was the site of one of the more infamous incidents on the LIRR. In 1982, a van with ten kids-all late teens/early 20s-was rolling toward the crossing here. The gates were down, and there was a line of cars waiting, not uncommon given that this is the only place to cross between Mineola and Merillon Av stations. The van ran around the waiting cars, and around the gates. It was hit square on by GP 38-2 265 leading a Port Jefferson train at 65 MPH. All but one of the occupants of the van died in the wreck; one was the daughter of a NY State senator. To no ones surprise, alcohol consumption by the driver was a contributing factor.

Wrong main
Title:  Wrong main
Description:  The Oyster Bay train at left is making its stop as usual on track 2. The train of M 1's is also eastbound, the two trains taking part in a dance that plays out every weekday afternoon here. The MU's are an eastbound all stops train from New York to Hicksville, which is planned to take track 1. The Oyster Bay train comes out from Jamaica on track 2, making Mineola as its first stop. While he does his station work, the MU train comes in and makes his stop. He has a stop signal on the Mineola Blvd overpass, which I am standing under. While the MU's do their work, the Oyster Bay train finishes, and takes a restricting signal to go up the branch, in front of the MU train. Once he's clear, the MU's get the signal on track 1, and resume their progress to Hicksville. Meanwhile, there are no westbound trains for about an hour while the LIRR uses both tracks eastbound between Queens and Divide. It was quite a show.

Double down to Port Jeff
Title:  Double down to Port Jeff
Description:  This Port Jefferson train has a pair of GP 38-2s rolling it west as it makes its stop at Mineola. There were a number of trains that ran with pairs of units, rather than just the one that powered most trains. Usually they were the heavier trains-some runs had 14 or 15 cars-and the parlor heavy Montauk trains.

A different 611
Title:  A different 611
Description:  Long Island used modified Alco FA's to provide train hotel power, and as control cabs. They were typically on the west end of trains, making photography of them leading somewhat problematic on their morning westbound runs. This one is pulling away as the train heads through Nassau interlocking and up the Oyster Bay branch. Of note are two buildings in the background. The first, seen above the second car from the FA, is Nassau tower. The Long Island may have the most active towers of any railroad in America at this point in history. The second notable structure is the ivy covered building immediately behind the FA. It was once a power station for the LIRR electrified lines, which, in addition to the Main Line west, also included third rail to East Williston on the Oyster Bay branch, and on the line that turned south here to reach Garden City and Hempstead. It was once possible to go from Mineola to West Hempstead and Valley Stream by train.

Westbound under the bridge
Title:  Westbound under the bridge
Description:  The train isnt so much the focal point here as are the signals. The LIRR was a Pennsy stepchild from 1900 to 1965, and adopted many of its parents practices, among them the position light signals here. They were always much cooler than color lights, especially in rush hour when the operator at Nassau would clear the routes as soon as a train passed. This made for interesting signa; watching, as they went through the sequence from stop to clear. Here we have one at stop on track 1, and a clear board for the next eastbound on track 2. Nassau tower is in the distance, under the Mineola Blvd overpass.

Nassau overhead
Title:  Nassau overhead
Description:  A view of Nassau tower and the switches to the Oyster Bay branch, looking down from the Mineola Blvd overpass. We see a westbound train coming off the branch behnid an FA. At one time, there was a connection from the Oyster Bay branch to a line that went down behind Franklin Av in Garden City, to the location of Garden tower, which was at that time a four way junction of the line from Mineola, the Hempstead Branch and the Mitchell Field Secondary. The line from Mineola was abaondoned and pulled up in the 1960s-I can recall very vaguely seeing Alco S types on the line on a few rare occasions in the mid 60's; the other lines remain. There is an office building at right just out of the photo. It's new since the last time I was in Mineola, about 1988. It stands where there was a connecting track from the Main Line to the line to Garden City. That track went to the right of the ivy covered building at far right. The platform you see was not extended til the 80's.
