GG1 4929 at Rye, New York |
Description: |
One great thing the Penn Central did was to bring GG-1 electrics to the former New Haven shore line, where they could run as far north as New Haven. Here, one pauses at Rye, New York on a chilly February morning in 1971, waiting for a clear signal. |

Alco-powered Work Train at Rye, N.Y., 1971 |
Description: |
Alco's S2 -- a 1,000 horsepower B-B switcher built between 1940 and 1950 -- was a successful follow-up to Alco's 600 hp S1. Penn Central owned a lot of them because each of its constituent railroads, the New York Central, Pennsylvania, and New Haven, were good S2 customers. In 1971, S2 #9606 -- a former NYC unit -- pulls a heavy-duty crane towards New Haven on the 4-track mainline at Rye, New York. Ektachrome by Stephen \. Baldwin. |

Hand me downs |
Description: |
The Danbury-and upper Harlem and Hudson-trains uses a motley collection of cars that were passed down to commuter service as PC got out of the long distance trade. Many were wanting for maintenance, though to the casual railfan rider who didnt have to deal with their lack of heat in the winter, and overabundance of it in the summer, they were like riding a museum. The best train was one of the Danbury runs thad had a full set of New Haven "American Flyer" cars. |

Unsung heroes |
Description: |
The unsung heroes of the New Haven line were these M-2s that were equipped with both pantographs and third rail shoes so they could make the flying change at Woodlawn and run from the ex New Haven onto the ex NYC electrified lines at speed. They soldiered on day in and day out for years. MUs may not be glamourous-wed all love to see washboards again-but they get the job done. |
