Splitting the semaphores |
Description: |
The Tier was known for its many Erie RR era semaphores. There were at least two pairs, one at Arkport, about five miles west of Hornell, rarely seen due to the walk in nature of their location; and this pair at Tioga Center, which were adjacent to NY 17C, and easy to photograph. ABBU, running wrong main, passes between them on its way west. |

SLN 5 rolls through the twin semaphores at MP 243-actually, they are 242-1 and 242-2, they were just east of MP 243-knocking down the signal on track 1. This was probably the most popular shot on the Tier west of Binghamton. Easy to get to, and couldnt beat a pair of blades side by side. |

Dropping the blade |
Description: |
I wanted to get the shot of BUOI splitting the semaphores, but a Conrail crew was working on the installation of new crossing protection. I backed off a few hundred feet, and got the blades, and the crew. The crossing here, Ayers Rd, previously had only crossbucks, and now would have gates and flashers. The semaphores would last another year. The roadway to the right of the tracks, and where the relay case is for the crossing protection, was once the LV Auburn Branch, which ran parallel to the EL from Owego to Waverly. |

One great thing about semaphores was you always knew what the signal indication was. The twin blades at Tioga Center, 242-1 and 242-2, show clear. If a train was imminent, there was a light on the base of the blade that lit, matching the indication on the blade. |

One fast, one slow |
Description: |
The signal on track 1 shows clear, while the signal on track 2 shows approach. This pair was not the only such arrangement on the Tier. There was also a side by side pair at Arkport, MP 337, but they were not close to the road, and it was either a walk in, or go across a cornfield to get to them. There were several that were not quite across from each other, but close enough, in the Canisteo valley, that were reasonably accessible. There was one double head set at Southport, but it was replaced in late 1988 before I knew about it, so I never got a photo. |

Rounding the curve |
Description: |
This spot was a good place for photo, though most fans paid more attention to the semaphores a mile to the east. Ayres Rd, which crossed the tracks at the signals, came back around and went over them on a bridge. By this time, the bridge was closed and the deck removed, but the end of it was still a good spot. We see OIBU rolling west approaching it, at the same spot where Bob Wilt caught the LV Sayre Turn, which ran on the now abandoned LV Auburn Branch, being overtaken by an EL westbound, seen on page 79 of EL in Color, Vol 2. |

D&H leading at the blades |
Description: |
An ex LV unit, now D&H, looks on at the remains of its old home as it passes between the semaphores at Tioga Center with a 53 car BUME. Standing orders were to run NYSW power head out when practicable. Sometimes it just wasn't. |

Ayres Rd |
Description: |
The other end, not the one youre familiar with. The Tioga Center semaphores were at the east end of Ayres Rd. The west end once crossed the tracks on the bridge seen here, but the bridge was closed in the late 80s when it needed significant repair. The Erie had build a number of these bridges over local roads, but never really did much to maintain them. Once they became deficient, there was a lot of finger pointing with the county or town over whose responsibility it was to fix it. Since no one wanted to spend the money-and Conrail surely wasnt-most of them were closed. It would have made a good place to shoot pictures from had the deck not been removed. |
