Run through power |
Description: |
NS power would sometimes turn up on OIBU, probably after Conrail borrowed it at Enola. It would run to Buffalo, getting turned back to NS there. A pair of NS units trail this OIBU passing the model railroad buildings at Waverly. In a few months, Guilford would put the D&H in bankruptcy and cut it loose. NS would assist in the directed service, and NS power would be a daily event on the Tier. |

Down the Lehigh |
Description: |
This going away shot of CGAL shows it on the connection from the ex EL Southern Tier Line(in the foreground) to the Lehigh Line. The steel bridge it is about to cross is NY 17. The train will be in Sayre PA on the ex LV in a few minutes. It will work the yard there, picking up and setting out for RELCO, a contract freight car rebuilder working out of the ex LV shop, and for local WAIT 2, which works the Ithaca Branch, the remaining portion of the LV Main and Passenger Main to Ithaca via Van Etten Jct. Despite an easy connection here, the EL and LV did not interchange at this location as a rule, and this was used mostly for detour moves prior to Conrail. Also note: see the comment below regarding the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, an LV component whose isolated track in Elmira was reached via trackage rights over the Erie/EL via this connection. |

Unusual power |
Description: |
Conrail had 100 units they designated GP 10, rebuilt from the several hundred GP 9s inherited from its component roads at start up. Typically, these were found in eastern PA, though sometimes elsewhere in the system. Work trains on the Tier tended to get B23-7s, U23Bs, and GP 38s or 40s for power, so it was unusual to find one of these GP 10s at Waverly on a work extra picking up old ties. It was nice to hear the mellow 567 sound as it worked past. Check out the railfan chase vehicle at left, and how about the side of that building??CR |

Early train |
Description: |
OIEL was usually an early morning job the days it ran, usually past Binghamton between 6 and 8 AM. I was up and out early, catching it rolling past the downtown buildings at Waverly. This train changed crews at Gang Mills, then took the Erie Main Line west at Hornell, serving Olean, Salamanca, and Jamestown. I really should have paid more attention to it on that segment; the problem was, you never knew if a new crew was getting on right away at Gang Mills. Sometimes the train would get there, and sit all day, killing the chase. I did get it a few times, just wish Id done it more. |

Laying over |
Description: |
An eastbound rail train is done for the time being, and is sitting on the east siding at Waverly. An SD 40-2 is the power today, rather uncommon for one of these moves, since they tended to get older power, a lot of times, U23Bs. How about that PC gon behind the power?? |
