PRR Altoona Machine Shops, c. 1853
Description:
WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1853. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Machine Shops complex. From 1850 until the completion of the Horseshoe Curve in 1854, the PRR's mainline was different than its current form: the tracks paralleled 9th Avenue out of Altoona to Duncansville and the interchange with the Allegheny Portage Railroad ~ instead of curving right at 9th Street, paralleling 10th Avenue past ALTO and SLOPE Towers, then climbing the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. As such, the mainline tracks and the Passenger Station are actually on the other side of the two-story Master Mechanic's Building and the long shop structure depicted here. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. William E. Burket Collection.

PRR Altoona Machine Shops, c. 1860
Description:
WB. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1860. Prominent here is the cathedral-like roundhouse near the center of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Machine Shops complex. With the completion of the Horseshoe Curve in 1854, the PRR's mainline took its current form: instead of paralleling 9th Avenue out of Altoona to Duncansville and interchange with the New Portage Railroad, the tracks curved right at 9th Street and paralleled 10th Avenue past SLOPE Tower and up the Allegheny Mountains. Note the two-story Master Mechanic's Building at the left and the unidentified wood-fired "Ten-Wheeler" parked in front of the roundhouse. [For more photos of this roundhouse, see RRPA album http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=142429] (Not Burket Collection.)

PRR Passenger Station Wreck, #1 of 2, 1899
Description:
iStation. Here is the first of two images of photos by unidentified photographers taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 21 December 1899. Shown here is the carnage of a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train that derailed near the Passenger Station. The train lost its brakes while descending the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains, jumped the tracks near 14th Street, and demolished another freight on an adjacent track. Several PRR men died in the process. Here, PRR engine #1280 assists in the recovery effort; it's an H-3 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1888 and retired in July of 1913 after 25 years of service. The Station's trainshed is at the right; discernable through the haze is the cathedral-like Middle Roundhouse. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge. William E. Burket Collection.

PRR 8th Street Tower, c. 1903
Description:
WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1903. Prominent here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's interlocking Tower at 8th Street, designation unknown. In the days of the Eastern Roundhouse, this Tower controlled the entrances and exits of all Middle Division locomotives ~ freight and passenger ~ being serviced in Altoona. Visible at the left are several passenger cars awaiting class repairs and an eastbound mineral train. In the distance are the 7th Street Bridge and the Altoona Yards beyond it. Note that the transmission tower at the right has no wires; they've not yet been strung, thereby linking the electric power generating plant at the South Altoona Shops with the Passenger Car Shops in the left distance. PRR Roundhouse #3 Blueprint
Description:
17th Street. Here is a blueprint diagram of the Pennsylvania Railroad's engine laddar and ready tracks near the 17th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania. (This item is undated.) Of special note here are the details for Roundhouse #3. By means of the turntaile, 38 steam locomotives could be serviced simultaneously. That was the kind of through-put that was necessary in the early days when relatively-smaller locomotives were used zo pull and push both passenger and freight trains up and over the Allegheny Mountains. With the development of relatively-larger locomotives during the 1920's, it was no longer necessart to keep a multitude of engines this far West. Bigger facilities were constructed in East Altoona and, consequently, both the men and the locomotives moved there.
