Rare ATSF 4-4-6-2 #1300 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:
So rare is this unusual 4-4-6-2 wheel configuration for a "compound Mallet" that the RRPA data base had no classification for it. Built by Baldwin in August of 1909 as one of two for the ATSF, the oil burning loco and its sister had an oddball combination of dead-end variants in its feed water heater, combustion chamber, and superheater which were compromised by other design elements. After unsuccesfully working in both passengeer and freight service, the pair were converted to a more conventional 4-6-2 in August of 1915 (#1300) and October of 1915 (#1301), thus ending this oddball configuration. Original specs - serial #33708, class 1300, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" high pressure cylinders, 38x28" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 376,450 lb and tractive effort of 53,697 lb.

GN 2-10-2 #2100 - Great Northern
Description:
Beautiful 1923 Baldwin builder's photo of the first of 45 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locomotives that were on the Great Northern roster. Specifics - Q-1, 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 31x32" cylinders, engine weight of 428,340 lb, impressive tractive effort of 87,131 lb. According to Steamlocomotive.com " Big engines in every respect, these Santa Fes had the Belpaire firebox beloved by the Great Northern, 15" (381 mm) piston valves, and lots of weight on the drivers. Their tube & flues had large diameters and the 60 superheater flues were among the most in any boiler. A smallish grate area meant much less to an oil-fired class and they had few rivals in the adhesion weight they could throw into hauling a train. They were rated at 3,000 tons of trailing load (75 cars) over the mountainous Montana profile between Whitefish and Cutbank. Most were oil burners as shown in the specs. Delivered with 370 sq ft of heating surface and 5,499 sq ft total, the class later added 39 sq ft of arch tubes and a trailing-truck booster developing 12,200 lb." After 27 years of hard service, this locomotive was scrapped in 1950.

ACL 4-8-4 #1805 - Atlantic Coast Line
Description:
This builder's photo shows the absolutely beautiful designed 4-8-4 Northern style locomotive built by Baldin in 1938 for the Atlantic Coast Line. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "These new 4-8-4s began to handle trains with as many as 21 heavyweight cars, eliminating the need for double-heading and running extra sections of many of the Richmond, VA to Jacksonville, FL "Specials". The ACL was very disappointed with their R-1s, and returned them to Baldwin for better counterbalancing of the 80 inch drive wheels. It seems the R-1s, as delivered, had a bad dynamic augment. Even after Baldwin checked their math, and put new disk drivers on the ACL R-1s, they still had unacceptable amounts of dynamic augment at high speeds. As soon as the ACL could replace them with EMD E-3 and E-6 diesel electrics, the Standard Railroad of the South put hts latest and largest steamers in freight service." Specs - class R1, 80" drivers, 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 460,270 lb, tractive effort of 63,901 lb. The class was retired in 1951-52.

CB&Q VO-1000 9352
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Baldwin VO-1000 9352 (c/n 70103) presumed at the Baldwin Eddystone, Pennsylvania plant around November 1943, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. The CB&Q received a total of 30 VO-1000's from Baldwin, not by choice, but as doled out by the War Production Board during World War II. The CB&Q would have preferred EMD switchers, but EMD was restricted to producing the FT model road diesel and Model 567 diesel power plants for submarines. The VO-1000's were assigned the 9350-9379 number series. They were powered by a De La Vergne four-cycle eight-cylinder in-line diesel prime mover coupled to Westinghouse electrical gear, producing 1000 horsepower, or 60,405 pounds of tractive effort. It was found that the single exhaust stack tended to create back pressure, and as a result, tended to overheat. The CB&Q (and other railroads) solved this problem by installing four stacks on many of its VO-1000's, resulting in a noisier locomotive. Some railroads went so far as to add eight exhaust stacks, a practice Baldwin called, "hot-rodding".
