C&O 4-8-4 #603 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR |
Description: |
Nice photo of the 1935 Lima built Northern-type locomotive that the C&O called "Greenbriers", their J-3 class. The first 5 were given names - this one being labeled "Edmund Randolf" after the distinguished statesman. According to www.Steamlocomotives.com " Known as Greenbriers on the C&O, these were among the largest 4-8-4s built. According to Drury (1993), the design was based on the earlier 2-10-4. All of the engines had the same power dimensions (cylinder volume, boiler pressure setting, and driver diameter) and 14" (356 mm) piston valves. All twelve had trailing-truck boosters to raise starting tractive effort. The first two orders used Worthington Type 5-S feed water heaters." Specifics - 74" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 477,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. No exact date was given for this photo so an arbitrary one was used. An unknown photographer captured this moment. |

C&O 2-8-8-2 #1550 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR |
Description: |
Beautiful photo by Glenn Pfleghar of the massive 1924 Alco-Schenectady 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake- type locomotive in the Clifton Forge, VA, yard. Often called "Simons" by the C&O (short for "Simple Simon"), these locos operated as simple-expansion articulateds, unlike the earlier compound Mallets. Specifics - H-7 class, 57" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" cylinders, engine weight of 567,500 lb, impressive tractive effort of 108,547 lb. . |

C&O 500, steam-turbine-electric |
Description: |
This photo was a gift to me, given many years ago. Original photographer and other data unknown. The notes on the back say that the photo was taken in "March 1948" (I guessed at a date--this was several years before I was born! My parents were still in high school at this time!) at Clifton Forge, VA "on the mainline". I don't know if C&O gave these three engines (500-502, Baldwin 1947) any names but "Jawn Henry" was a completely different steam turbine built for Norfolk and Western. |

Description: |
A good looking EMD diesel built in April of 1947 for the C&O, it sits outside a shop area. Unfortunately, no exact location or date were given for this scanned photo so arbitrary location and date was assigned. Wish it was a color photo - the yellow, navy & gray paint scheme was a knock-out combination! |

CO Steam Turbine #500 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Amateur photo of the C&O experimental steam turbine locomotive built in 1947 by Baldwin with Westinghouse electrical traction motors. Nicknamed "John Henry", the unique locomotive and its 2 sisters had multiple problems causing constant breakdowns and delays. They ended up on the dead line in 1949 and quietly scrapped in 1950. This innovative steam locomotive just could not beat the diesel superiority. C.W. Jernstrom labeled photo |

CO Steam Turbine #500 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Interesting amateur photo showing two crew members getting ready to load coal in the hopper located at the front of C&O #500, the "John Henry". Coal dust drifting backward from this position in the loco fowled the forward traction motors and caused many breakdowns. Other problems plagued the 106 feet long, 856,000 lb, five trucked (2-C1-2-C1-B arrangement) steam turbine locomotive. It and its 2 sisters were retired in 1949 and scrapped in 1950. The innovative steam experiment had failed again and diesels were here to stay. C.W. Jernstrom labeled photo |

CO 4-8-4 #614 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Interesting loco built by Lima nn June of 1948. Massive, powerful and commanding to say the least and a loco with nine lives. The unit would continue long after the other Greenbriers (4-8-4's to the C&O) were retired. It was a test loco for the American Coal Enterprise as they tried developing a coal burning steam locomotive that could compete with diesel loco on a>cost basis. It also served as the Chessie Safety Special. This photo by Arthur B. Johnson. |

C&O 4-8-4 #612 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR |
Description: |
Here stands one of the finest examples of a 4-8-4 ever built by Lima, delivered to the C&O in 1948. Railroad historian Eugene Huddleston noted the skepticism concerning this order (for the last 4-8-4's): "Simply amazing is the expenditure of so much money to produce a "state of the art" locomotive in the waning days of steam. It seems nothing was sacrificed to equip the new Greenbriers with the latest features and best appliances. Enthusiasm was still the word in 1947, as this writer well recalls from being told about the order for five more Greenbriers from Lima Locomotive Works by locomotive engineer Vince Hiltz." Specifics - J-3a class, 74" drivers, 255 psi boiler pressure, 27.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 482,200 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. Jim Scribbins photo |

Seen sitting in the Clifton Forge, VA, yard is C&O 2-8-4 #2756 buiilt by Lima in 1947. The C&O called this wheel configuration "Kanawhas" rather than the more conventional "Bershires". Good fortune smiled on this loco as it was not sent to the scrapper's torch but preserved as a static display at Huntington Park in Newport News, VA. Specs - serial #9263, K-4 class, 69" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x34" cylinders, engine weight of 460,000 lb and tractive effort of 69,368 lb.
