Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Title:  Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Description:  Built by the Richmond Locomotive Works in 1895 with construction number 2186, #102 would spend it's entire life hauling passenger trains along the lines of the Chesapeake Western Railway between Elkton, Virginia, and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally delivered for the Chesapeake & Western Railroad as #102 with the name "Lizzie Allison", the locomotive was probably purchased with funds from the estate of W. E. D. Stokes who was the owner and directer of the railroad at that point in time. On March 3, 1900, Stokes officially decided to change the name of the railroad from the Chesapeake & Western Railroad to the Tidewater & West Virginia Railroad. This new name didn't stick though because the railroad never actually extended into West Virginia. This led Stokes to revert the name back to the Chesapeake & Western and immediately lease the line to the newly incorporated Chesapeake Western Railway which itself was established on March 13, 1901 with the same management. At some point while working on the Chesapeake Western, the name "Lizzie Allison" was removed from the side of the locomotive cab and the engine was then on only known as #102. The locomotive was still in active service as late as 1937 as seen in this photograph, but was probably running on borrowed time as it was retired in the late 1930's and scrapped. This photograph displays #102 stopped with a passenger train at the Elkton, Virginia, passenger station. The first passenger car being the locomotive's tender appears to be a baggage car. Month and year are correct. Exact date is an estimate.

Chesapeake Western Railway M-75
Title:  Chesapeake Western Railway M-75
Description:  Built by the Edwards Motor Car Company of Sanford, North Carolina, in April of 1934 with construction number #184, #75 was Originally built for the Virginia & Carolina Southern Railroad of Hope Mills, North Carolina, as their #304. The gas powered, 20 ton motor car shuttled passengers across the Virginia & Carolina Southern's system from Hope Mills to Lumberton, North Carolina, until it was sold to the Gainesville Midland Railroad of Gainesville, Georgia and assigned a now unknown number. While working for the Gainesville Midland, the motor car was upgraded with a new Cummins Diesel Engine which increased power and reliability. Later, at an unknown date, the locomotive was sold to the Georgia Car & Locomotive Company which was a locomotive reselling business headquartered out of Atlanta, Georgia. On December 24, 1941, the locomotive was officially sold to the Chesapeake Western Railway of Elkton, Virginia, and shipped on March 3, 1942. Assigned number M-75 and later just number #75, the motor car was probably bought to replace what was left of the passenger business along the line originally taken care of by old #102. When passenger business finally dried up completely on the line in the late 1940's, the motor car was most likely retired and scrapped at the Elkton, Virginia, shops where this photograph was taken. Year is correct. Exact date is an estimate.

Chesapeake Western Railway #111
Title:  Chesapeake Western Railway #111
Description:  Built by the American Locomotive Works Richmond Plant in November of 1911 with construction number 43195, #111 was originally purchased by the Norfolk & Western Railway as part of an order of fifty class M-1 Mastodon type 4-8-0 locomotives. The Norfolk & Western also received fifty class M-1's from the Baldwin locomotive works totaling 100 engines as part of the M-1 class. Numbered #1077 while working on the Norfolk & Western Railway, the locomotive was assigned mainline duty until the late 1930's when more powerful articulates were placed on the road to command massive coal drags from West Virginia to Lambert's Point on the East Coast. Trying to shed some extra motive power, the Norfolk & Western agreed to sell six mastodons to the Chesapeake Western Railway which was run by Don W. Thomas at the time. #1077 was officially sold to the Chesapeake Western on March 2, 1943, and renumbered #111. Purchased with the intent to handle larger freight trains associated with the revival of the CW under the leadership of Don W. Thomas, the locomotive was used until being replaced by the new Baldwin switchers in the late 1940's. The locomotive, along with it's five sisters, was retired and scrapped in 1947 at the Elkton, Virginia, shops. This photograph shows the locomotive sitting in the deadline at the Elkton shops in either 1946 or 1947 shortly before it was scrapped. Date is an estimate. Unknown photograapher.
