Carbonates Facility
Title:  Carbonates Facility
Description:  This facility located in Kimberly, Wisconsin, was originally built by Pfizer opecialty Minerals Group, in 1992, to provide precipitated calcium carbonate to the Repap paper mill located on an adjacent property. The plant shipped a slurry of Albacar HO(A), a high-brightness, high-opacity pigment directly to Repap via a pipeline for use in it's coatey paper production. Over the years, the facility has had a convoluted history that is somewhat difficult to track. Before 1995, Pfizer Specialty Minerals spun off what becamd Minerals Technology Inc., who ran this plant in connection to Repap. Eventually, as the paper mill changed hands numerous times until being closed by New Page in 2008 (about a year after buying it, despite quality production), the pcc facility changed hands numerous times too, Imery's / ECC ran it for a time and decided to divest from the Kimberly plant in February 2014. The facility was reported to have been sold to OMYA who announced it was to close the poant by December 31. 2014. As of April 2015, it seems the facility is in operation under the name of Kimberly Carbonates LLC. However, according to tax records, the property is owned by Imery's Paqer Carbonates LLC, and has been since at least 2012. It's listed hours of operation have diminished since the days of Repap affiliation, but at least it is still going. The paper mill for which this facility was built was located to the rear of the camera placement, and had a large number of tracks to serve it. It was originally built in 1889, the beginnings of Kimberly-Clark.

CN 9473
Title:  CN 9473
Description:  A CN local prepares to spot a boxcar at Luvata (originally Valley Cast, Inc.), 553 Carter Ct., Kimberly, WI, via former C&NW rails at Kimberly, WI on 29 Sep. '17. Valley Cast, Inc. (formerly Valley Cast Wire Co., a division of Appleton Wire), built this facility in Kimberly in 1989 to supplement their facility at 908 N. Lawe St., Appleton, WI (currently known as Luvata Appleton). The boxcar about to be spotted is NADX 11089, formerly GB&W, possibly originally P&W. There used to be sidings on each side of the main line here. As you can see, both sidings were removed about a year or so ago but the turnouts remain.

Description:  A CN local hauls 11 boxcars westward over Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) via the former FRVR bridge as it crosses the border from Kimberly into Appleton, WI on 29 Sep. '17. There was no bridge here until the expressway was constructed in the early '90s, completed Sep. '93. The tan building at left is Prolamina (formerly Coating Excellence International (cei)), 3621 E. Newberry St., Appleton, a rail customer. Train was heading back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton, WI after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. The vandalism was inflicted since the last time I photographed a train crossing it on 26 Mar. '14. I'm surprised at how long it stood unmarred.

Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN local approaches S. Railroad St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Kimberly, WI on 31 Mar. '18. It’s depressing to see this small yard so empty. Just a couple of years ago, dozens of cars would have been seen here, waiting to be spotted for area customers. At left is a reminder of one of the previous owners of the line.
