This appears to be a newly delivered Baldwin 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive for the Milwaukee Road roster. Note the pristine whitewalls and the gleaming engine case as proof. Original Specs - serial #62094, S2 class, 74" drivers, impressive 295 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders,thermic syphon engine weight of 490,450 lb, tractive effort of 70,8816 lb. Caught with a light coating of snow is CM&StP 4-6-0 #1077. The loco originally started out as MILW Vauclain compownd 4-6-0 #354 built by Baldwin in September of 1900. During its nearly 40 years of service, it had many numbers - renumbered in 3/1907 to #1704, renumbered in 10/1912 to #4304, renumbered and simplified in 3/1921 to #2854, renumberedßhn 6/1938 to #1077. The loco was scrapped in May of 1940. No photographer or date was listed. |

1930's stylish, sleek and fast. Delivered to the Milwaukee Road in August of 1938, this was the epitome of 1930's streamlining and speed. Tthe"streamlined "Hudson" (called "Baltic" by Milwaukee) F7s are major contenders for the fastest steam locomotives ever built, as they ran at over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) daily in the Hiawatha service. The loco was eventually retired in June of 1951. Specs - class F-7, streamlined, 84" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 415,000 lb, tractive effort of 50,294 lb. No photographer listed and the date is approximate. |

Built by the Burnham, Wms & Company (Baldwin predecessor) in December of 1895, the loco was originally Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Vauclain compound 4-6-0 #830 but not for long. It was renumbered in 4/1899 to CMStP #203, renumbered in 11/1905 to CMStP #841, renumbered in 12/1912 to CMStP #4003, rebuilt & renumbered in 7/1914 to CMStP #2253, and finally renumbered in 6/1938 to CMStP&P #1188. After serving nearly 50 years, the loco was scrapped in October of 1945. Simplified specs - 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 19x26" cylinders, modest engine wt of 132,500 lb nad modest tractive effort of 22,794 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
