This caboose is painted in its original maroon and gray SAR livery. Cabooses are used as living quarters, usually for personnel on tasks away from home at places without suitable accommodation. Even though they are always painted in passenger car livery, they usually run as part of goods trains. Side B is the passage side and this model has a baggage car type door and two personnel doors on this side, with no vestibule. At the right end is a tool locker door, which is absent on some of these models. |

Between July 1968 and March 1970 the South African Railways placed one hundred and fifteen Class 33-400 GE U20C diesel-electric locomotives in service. In 1990 forty-five of them were transferred to TransNamib, the Namibian Railways, where some have been rebuilt with reconditioned engines and renumbered from number 501 up. In 1994 Spoornet took delivery of ten Class 14E1 dual voltage 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC electric main line locomotives, numbered in the range from 14-101 to 14-110. Designed by Consortium, consisting of Siemens, ABB, AEG-Westinghouse, GEC and Alsthom-Atlantique, they were built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, under licence to Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works. The original order was for fifty locomotives, but it was reduced to ten after some unsatisfactory trial results. 14-102 was destroyed in a collision between the Blue Train and the Shosholoza Meyl at Deelfontein on 27 October 2005. In 1904 the Cape Government Railways placed its final batch of ten 8th Class 4-8-0 Mastodon steam locomotives in service, built by North British Locomotive Company. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered in the range from 1234 to 1243 and reclassified to Class 8F. In the 1930s locomotives no. 1236, 1242 and 1243 were equipped with superheated boilers, 20 inches (508 millimetres) bore cylinders and inside admission piston valves and reclassified to Class 8FW.
