Beer Van in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Beer Van in the CD Muzeum
Description:  The title pretty much says it all. This is a beer van, or boxcar, that doesnt appear to be refrigerated. In reality, beer doesnt need to be refrigerated until maybe the time of serving, so that makes sense. I dont know for certain, but I assume that crew shelter is for a security guard rather than a brakeman, as beer theft seems a likely possibility in Czechoslovakia. Does anybody know for certain?

CD 103001-4 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  CD 103001-4 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Supposedly built out of an old E436 Class electric, this locomotive would have been built sometime in 1927 or 1928 by CKD, in spite of its relatively modern Ceske Drahy markings. Power originally would have been 806Kw (1081 horsepower), although I know know if thats what it puts out now. Originally its top speed would have been 60Km/h, which again for a locomotive this small and this old, which appears to be only a switcher, is rather impressive. I note that this locomotive also lacks a pantograph, in spite of being built originally to run on 1,500 volts DC, which is much more than is typically delivered through a third rail. Any further historical information on this locomotive would be welcome, as Ive been able to find what I have only through piecemeal skimming of Czech websites. As with a lot of locomotives at Luzna, Ill have to dig out my books to properly trace the history back, and even then I may be able to use your help.

CD 720058-7 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  CD 720058-7 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #720058-7 is one of the many Class 720 diesel locomotives that were built in 1958-1961 by CKD for CSD, the DR (in East Germany), Albanian Railways, and the Iraq Railroad. Today, theyre of secondary importance on CD, many of them working for construction contractors, although they were always primarily switchers rather than road switchers, having only 551Kw (739 horsepower). This is in spite of their hood-unit construction, which makes them look beefier.

CD Class 749 Diesel Locomotive
Title:  CD Class 749 Diesel Locomotive
Description:  Next to the interlocking is this battered (but apparently crudely repainted) CD Class 749 diesel. The CD number has been removed, and the old CSD number reinstalled on the side, although I dont have a picture of the number handy right now. This locomotive is also at the entrance to the Ceske Drahy Muzeum, off to the left in this picture, where I shot many, many pictures both with my cameraphone and with my Nikon (the next day), and my cameraphone shots are going to be posted here. My Ektachromes from the Nikon will eventually find their way into an NRHS show, I hope.

Coal Stove on an Old CSD Passenger Train
Title:  Coal Stove on an Old CSD Passenger Train
Description:  This was after I got on. As Ive said already, CSD kept some very old fashioned passenger car technology until comparatively late in their history, with some wooden passenger cars from the 1940s being heated by coal stoves like this one. American and British trains stopped using these with the advent of steam heating in the 1880s and 1890s, as the combination of coal stoves and wooden construction was thought to constitute a fire hazard.

Description:  Im not 100% certain, but Im pretty sure that this is a camp car for MOW service, given the configuration of the windows, and the small baggage door. It could also be a combine or a brake van, but a combine would have a bigger$door, I think. Again, more research might uncover something interesting.

1954&CSD Rulebook
Title:  1954&CSD Rulebook
Description:  Like a lot of railway museums, the CD Muzeum has a book collection, and some of the books are on display. This is an operating rulebook from 1954, with the first chapter devoted to locomotive operation. One of the rules on the first pahe dictates that affixed to the front of CSD locomotives, there had to be a red star, the "international symbol of the workers." See the next photo for more details.

Title:  ex-CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Picture 3
Description:  This was the scene as the Albatross cylinder cocks were blown for the run into the museum. Even on a very short move, this is an important procedure on a steam locomotive, as even a little bit of water in the cylinders can blow them up, which is dangerous and extremely expensive, especially for a non-profit organisation.

Ex-CSD 324.391 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 324.391 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #324.391 is a little bit harder to research than the other locomotives at the museum, but the museum has a bit of information on their website. It was built in 1908 by StEG (the predecessor to the OBB) at Maschinenfabrik Wien, but ended up on the Buštehrad Railway, which was nationalised into CSD in the 1920's. Because it had worked for a smaller railway, when it ended up on CSD it was too antiquated and small to be anything but a shunter (switcher), having only 175kW (235 horsepower) and being capable of only 50Km/h. Given how little power it had, it's amazing it could even do 50Km/h with even a light load. In spite of this, it survived into the 1960's in Karlovy Vary, and survived even longer as a stationary boiler, although it is no longer operable. Like some other locomotives at the museum, it actually is the property of the Narodni Technicky Muzeum in Prague.

Ex-CSD 354.195 and KND 29 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 354.195 and KND 29 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  The locomotive on the left in this picture is former CSD #354.195, and the locomotive on the right is an old industrial locomotive numbered 29 that worked on the KND industrial railway, which served lime quarries in Kladno from 1858 to 1968. 354.195 is a 354.1 Class (by the CSD classification system) 4-6-2T (some sources mistakenly say that this is a 2-6-2, so maybe originally it was, see here: http://www.laenderbahn-forum.de/journal/die_reihe_429_k-k-priv-suedbahn/bilder/429_Micro-Metakit_CSD-354-640x426.jpg) based on an old Austrian design from 1917, but built in 1925 by CMK, one of the predecessors to CKD. After the creation of Czechoslovakia and CSD, these locomotives remained in production until 1941, being produced by CKD and Skoda. More confusing is that the museum website classifies it as a tender locomotive, which it clearly isn't. Maybe it was at one time, as #354.7152 is, although 354.7152 is also a 4-6-2. Rated power for the 354.1 Class is 830kW (1113 horsepower, although the museum rounds this up to 1150), while the top speed is 80Km/h. Originally, 236 locomotives were in the fleet, and 354.195 is one of the few still running (I'm not aware exactly how many more there are, but 354.7152 is pictured on the museum website in steam). #354.195's regular mainline career spanned into the 1970's. #29 is an 0-6-0T, and was built by Skoda in 1950, being one of an order of 8. Other than this, though, information on the historical placard was sparse, and because it's an industrial locomotive I haven't been able to get too much more information about it.

Description:  mThis is another steamer that I dont know much about, partly because the number, 3624, is probably not accurate. I cant find it on any of the rosters. Title:  Ex-CSD 433.049 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  433.049 is one of 60 2-8-2T's built by CKD in 1948. The power rating on the Class 433's is 600kW (805 horsepower), and the maximum speed is 60Km/h, meaning that if these were mixed traffic locomotives, mostly for branchlines. They survived into 1980, and as the museum website explains "These locomotives last served in the depots in Prostejov and Skalice nad Svitavou. This is also the origin of the nickname “Skalicák”."

Ex-CSD 434.2298 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 434.2298 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #434.2298 was one of 345 434.2 Class 2-8-0's built between 1924 and 1947 by CKD, and by CSD's own shops. #434.2298 is special, though, because it was built out of an older locomotive from Weiner Neustadt that dated to 1914. I don't know the exact date that #434.2298 was rebuilt, however. The museum's own website is confusing in this regard. The 434.2 Class was based on an earlier Austrian design dating back to 1897 (hence the reason, perhaps, for the rebuild), and was quite modern for its day. It's superheater was often noted, although most new mainline locomotives around the world were superheated by 1924. Later builds after 1939 had larger superheaters than earlier ones, but were counted as part of the same class. The most powerful 434.2 Class locomotives of all put out 1400 horsepower (in spite of weighing only 69.5 metric tonnes, with an adhesive weight of 58), and could pull a 600 tonne train up a 10% grade at 30Km/h, a truly extraordinary achievement by the standards of any era. On level track, however, only 60Km/h was possible. Such heavy haulers as these were clearly intended as freight locomotives, but many were used also on passenger trains (as old photos will confirm), and #434.2186 remains in service with CD as an excursion locomotive (although #434.2298 is inoperable, and not even owned by the CD Muzeum, being from the Narodni Technicky Muzeum collection in Prague). Wikipedia claims that the 434.2 Class remained in regular service on CSD until 1983, but this contradicts most of the other sources that I've read, which put the last year of mainline steam on CSD as 1982. Of course, some units may have been kept as backup locomotives until 1983, just as some American railroads kept steam backup locomotives into 1963, in spite of the last regularly scheduled mainline steam trips being ended in 1960.

Ex-CSD 44312 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 44312 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  Im not aware of the precise history of #44312, but I do note that its of wood construction, with screw couplers (it looks like) leaf springs and two carbody-mounted axles, but with automatic air brakes. Therefore, it could be quite old, although some mid-19th-century design features survived on CSD into the 1940s, so looks can be deceiving. I do not that at the moment 44312 is being used to store steam locomotive parts.

Description:  The first time I spotted this locomotive was in Decin, where its based. Its fully operational, but wasnt in steam when I visited the museum. Its a 475 Class 4-8-2, a generation later than the 498 Class (except for the actual record-breaking Albatros, which was a 498.1 Class from the 1950s), which means that this class was built from 1945 until 1951 by Skoda. Power is 1480kW (1985 horsepower), and the officially recognised maximum speed iu 100Km/h, although these locomotives are almost certainly capable of going faster.

Ex-CSD 477.043 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 477.043 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #477.043 is a CSD Class 477 4-8-4T, making it one of the only 4-8-4's built for use in Europe. That it's a tank makes it even more unusual, in addition to its three cylinders and Kylchap double-blastpipe chimney. However, the 477 "Papousek" (Parrot) Class numbered 60 units in its heyday. The 477's were built by CKD from 1951 (I don't have a final production year, but this one was built in 1954), and remained in CSD service until 1981, being some of the last mainline steam locomotives to operate on CSD. #477.043 had an even longer career, however, becoming an industrial locomotive at a power plant in Malesice, not making it into the museum's collection until 2000. They were primarily suburban or express passenger locomotives, in spite of their odd configuration, and could run at up to 100Km/h, although no faster, maybe because they were tank engines, and maybe because CSD simply didn't have very good track for high speed running. Power was 1595kW (2139 horsepower, although the museum rounds this to 2100). Service weight was 130 tonnes, which was above average both for a Czech tank engine and for a Czech locomotive generally. Today, #477.043 still runs, and can occasionally be seen on excursion trains, although on the day I visited the CD Muzeum it wasn't in steam. It's officially allocated to Louny, but again not everything is what it seems.

CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Being Watered at the CD Muzeum
Title:  CSD 498.022, the "Albatros," Being Watered at the CD Muzeum
Description:  Heres the Albatros being watered for its return trip to Praha Branik. This water spout is the one located within the museum grounds, next to the coal bunker. In the lower left corner of this photo you can also see an ashpit, which might double as an inspection pit. Its cramped, though, so probably they would be better off using one in the shops.

Title:  Ex-CSD 54 88-80 013-4 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  There werent many dining cars at the museum when I was there, but this one was being used as the museum cafe. It looked to be in very good condition, at least in appearance. I dont know very much about its mechanical state, but nothing seemed clearly missing (I didnt look too carefully).

Ex-CSD 524.159 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 524.159 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #524.159 is a Class 524.1 2-10-2T which, surprisingly, would have been used in mixed traffic, particularly on mountainous routes. As with the 434, there was more than one specification that qualified as a 524.1 Class, so I don't know the exact specs of this one (although the museum has some of them, which sound like round figures). It would have, however, a top speed between 55 and 60Km/h, and would have a power rating of either 935kW (1254 horsepower) or 1030kW (1381 horsepower). The museum claims 935kW or 1250 horsepower and 55Km/h for #524.159. These locomotives had a very long production run, like the 434.2 Class, so that may explain why the 524.1 Class also has more than one accepted specification. The 162 locomotives of the 524.1 Class were produced from 1918 until 1943 by CKD and Skoda, and weren't pulled from service until 1980, making them some of the last mainline steam locomotives in Czechoslovakia. Supposedly #524.159 was built by CKD in 1929, but the museum doesn't give a date of retirement.

Ex-CSD 555.0301 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 555.0301 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is actually not a Czech locomotive or a Soviet locomotive, but a German Kriegslok from World War II (built by Wiener Lokomotivfabrik, Floridsdorf in 1943) that's been disguised as a Soviet locomotive, as it would have later served on RZD in the Soviet Union after being claimed as reparations. These locomotives became the RZD TE Class, and #555.0301 was one of 100 purchased from RZD in 1962-1963 for heavy freight service. With 1178kW ( 1580 horsepower) they had more power than the typical Czech locomotive, and they were also very fast for a Czech freight locomotive, being capable of 80Km/h in service. Of course, they weren't Czech. During their RZD service, they were converted to run on Russian 1524mm broad-gauge track, but obviously CSD converted them back to 1435mm standard-gauge. After serving into the 1970's, the Kriegsloks on CSD were put back into military use, although this time as reserve locomotives. Many European governments stashed steam locomotives away in the 1950's-1990's, expecting an oil shortage should a total war break out, but the Czech government gave up this policy in 1993, at least for the Kriegsloks, thus freeing up this locomotive for historic preservation. Unfortunately, it doesn't still run, in spite of having been kept for service so late.

Description:  Here's another shot taken of the Kriegslok's cab, which appears to be a heavy-duty winter cab, which makes sense given that it served in the Soviet Union. The number "T3-3644" must have been the number for Soviet service, unless they had to make one up for display (I don't know if they have the records).

CD 735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  CD 735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  A diesel-electric mixed-traffic road switcher, the 735 Class were introduced in 1971 and built until 1979 by TS Martin. All were withdrawn by 2002, and this one looks a bit beat up, albeit preserved in the CD Muzeum as a stationary exhibit. The ditch lights are smashed, but surprisingly theres little graffiti on it. I dont know how many parts have been scrounged or stolen from inside it, though.

Ex-CSD 830090-7 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD 830090-7 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  #830090-7 is an 830 Class DMU, originally classified as an M242 DMU. These units were produced from 1949 to 1960 by Tatra, CKD, and Kralovopolska, and could operate at up to 90Km/h. The class stayed in use on CD until 2008, and many examples, like this one, have been preserved.

Description:  Heres a fairly-modern 2nd Class smooth side streamline coach, of what vintage I dont know. Streamline equipment generally didnt come into use on CSD until the 1960s, so its probably from sometime around then. Again, a spotters guide for passenger cars would be good to have.

Ex-CSD Ci4-1732 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD Ci4-1732 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is an old open-platform wooden coach, which appears to be in pretty good shape, good enough to be serviceable. Its possible to see coaches like this on excursion trains in the Czech Republic, and my understanding is that they were used quite late in mainline and branchline service, too. Some were in fact built as late as the 1940s, in spite of being 50 years out of date by that point.

Ex-CSD M124.001 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD M124.001 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is another unit that I can't get info on right now. It's M designation would indicate a DMU, a gas-electric doodlebug, or something similar, but it's actually a "steam motor car" or "steam carriage," built in 1903 by Ringhoffer, which would make it of Austrian kkStB heritage, originally carrying the number 1001. Since kkStB's Czech stock was transferred to CSD eventually, that's how it got its CSD number. In actuality, it was one of two such steam motor cars intended for use on the Czech Northern Railway, which proved to be too steep for them, and kkStB ended up with them after they were rejected. Both were originally called "Komarek" steam motor cars, and in contrast to the originally rural setting that they were supposed to operate in, they ended up in suburban services out of Prague. They were phased out of this service before the end of steam on CSD, though, with #M124.001 ending up in the Narodni Technicky Muzeum as early as 1949. As far as I know, #M124.001 is the only surviving unit now, and the CD Muzeum claim that it is the oldest operating steam vehicle in their collection.

Ex-CSD M131.1238
Title:  Ex-CSD M131.1238
Description:  M131.1238 is an M131 Class railbus, later reclassified a Class 801 under the 1988 renumbering scheme. These units were produced from 1948 until 1956 by Tatra, eventually totalling 549 for the fleet, a very large number when you consider that none remain in service today, as all were withdrawn by 1984, a service lifespan of only 36 years, with some serving less than 30. Their small size may have had something to do with this, as they could only seat 48 people to a modern 810 Classs 55, plus 40 standees, along with their maximum speed of 60Km/h compared with 80Km/h for an 810. Other antiquated features would have been their mechanical transmissions (compared to the 810s hydraulic transmission), and their antiquated Tatra T 301 engines, which were based on the old Tatra T111 from Tatras World War II-era trucks, that in spite of having 14.8 liters displacement from 12 cylinders, only produced about 155-160 horsepower.

Ex-CSD M240.0100 and ex-CSD #735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Title:  Ex-CSD M240.0100 and ex-CSD #735175-2 in the CD Muzeum
Description:  This is a Class M240 DMU, used on suburban and rural branchlines up to the present day. Built by Skoda between 1959 and 1964, these DMUs are old, so they probably dont have too many years left in service. I looked the fleet up on Wikipedia, and only two were listed as still in service as of 2009, one of them in MOW service. Therefore, the remainder are heˆhtage units like this one.
