SAR Class 8A 1106 (4-8-0) |
Description: |
In 1902 the Imperial Military Railways placed forty Cape 8th Class 4-8-0 Mastodon steam locomotives in service, built by two manufacturers (twenty by Neilson, Reid and Company and twenty by Sharp, Stewart and Company). In that same year, when the Central South African Railways was established, they were designated Class 8-L1. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered in the range from 1092 to 1131 and reclassified to Class 8A. In the 1930s two of these locomotives were equipped with superheated boilers, 20 inches (508 millimetres) bore cylinders and inside admission piston valves and were reclassified to Class 8AW. It is a more powerful version of the EMD Class 34-200, 34-600 and 34-800, designed by Electro-Motive Diesel and built by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth. They were numbered in the range from 37-001 to 37-100. In 2008 one of them, no. 37-010, was rebuilt to Class 39 prototype no. 39-251 that was tested but rejected by Transnet and later reported as sold to RRL. In 2009 Transnet Freight Rail placed the first of one hundred and ten new Class 19E single cab 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC dual voltage electric locomotives in service on the Coalink line between Ermelo and Richars Bay, numbered in the range from 19-001 to 19-110. It is the second dual voltage locomotive to be introduced in South Africa after the Class 14E and 14E1 and is equipped with on]oard voltage detectors. The locomotive is the product of a joint venture by Mitsui for the design, Toshiba for the electrical equipment, the RSD division of DCD-Dorbyl for the bofies and Union Carriage and Wagon for the bodies and manufacturing.
