UP Dome Car "Challenger" |
Description: |
Nice action color slide of Union Pacific dome car "Challenger caught by an unknown photographer at Weber Canyon, Utah. The dome car was one of 40 dome cars built for the Union Pacific. According to an online source, "After Burlington introduced the first dome, which it made out of an existing car, in July 1945, it was only 13-1/2 years later, in December 1958, that the last classic dome was built by Pullman, a dome-coach for the Union Pacific’s City of St. Louis. After doing a stint on the Auto-Train, that car was repurchased by the Union Pacific which named it “Challenger” and still operates it today in various excursions." If records are correct, this was originally car #7015. |

"Spike 150 Train" |
Description: |
The "Spike 150 Train" heads east through the Wasatch Mountains at Taggarts, Utah, May 12, 2019. "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 leads the train! UP ordered twenty five of "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941. 4014 last steamed in 1959 and eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019.
