BO 2-8-8-0 #7313 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Still running the rails with a long drag of coal cars is Baltimore & Ohio massive 2-8-8-0 #7313. Originally built in January of 1918 by Alco-Richmond as Seaboard Air Line 2-8-8-2 #513, the SAL found the massive compound articulated loco unsuitable and very costly to maintain for their system. They sold #7313 and its sisters to the B&O in 1920. In 1923, the B&O Shops rebuilt it into a simple-articulated Mallet and reclassed as EL-6a After nearly 32 years of service, the loco was sold for scrap in July of 1950. That would have been one HUGE pile of scrap metal! Simplified EL-6a specs - 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, four 25x32" cylinders, engine wt of 492,000 lb and impressive tractive effort of 108,000 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. |

CO 2-6-6-6 #1625 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
In the O. Winston Link style, this photo shows the massive face of the Lima built 2-6-6-6 Allegheny type locomotive delivered to the C&O in July of 1944. According to www.steamlocomtitve.com "H-8s could operate 11,500-ton coal trains at speeds up to 45 mph (72.5 km/h). Probably the heaviest twelve-axle locomotives ever built, with certainly the highest axle load ever put on rails. Average axle load was 84,650 lb (38,397 kg) and the first driving axle bore 86,700 lb (39,327 kg)." Specs - H-8-1600 class, 67" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 22.5x33" cylinders, beefy engine weight of 771,300 lb, impressive tractive effort of 110,211 lb. No date or location give for this photo. P.C. Studios photo credit |

WM # Truck Shay #6 - Western Maryland |
Description: |
Delivered by Lima on May 14, 1945, this three truck Shay was the second largest Shay ever built. It was purchased by the WM to move coal down from Chaffee, WV to the end of the Chaffee Branch at Vindex, MD. #6 only saw five years of service before the mines closed and she was donated to the B&O Museum as a static display. In 1980, she was the center of a trade that ended up with #6 heading to Cass Scenic Railroad. She was immediately put to work in excursion service there. There are a few factors that make me think this may be a photo from 1949 or 1950. The paint striping at the cab window is missingt - something it had in 1981 on. The quality of the photo paper is thicker and slightly sepia toned from age. The image is consistent with older photo qualities. Hence, this may be from 1949-50 in West Virginia. |

Description: |
Here is another view of Baltimore & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Mogul Mallet type steam #7450 built by Baldwin in November of 1930. This was the control locomotive used to compare performance between its conventional firebox compared to BO #7400's experimental Emerson watertube firebox. The loco lasted for 23 years before being sold for scrap in July of 1953. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears to be West Virginia area around 1950 |
