Semaphores and Crossing Gates |
Description: |
De-activated semaphores and signal tower still stand at the west end of Ballarat Station in Victoria. A historical sign adjacent to the tower states that the elaborate track gates were installed in 1885 and remained manualy operated until 2001. They now automatically rotate to block traffic on Lydiard Street when trains approach. |

Grade Crossing in Australia |
Description: |
They take their grade crossings serious in Australia. The signs and fences leave no doubt that you're about to cross the tracks here. Signal towers are also common here- many remain years after being closed in favor of remote control. |
