Danes Down Under |
Description: |
A pair of Independent Rail 14-class units (1434 and 1437) haul a 'down' (away from Sydney-westbound in this case) container train towards Yass Junction in December 2011. These 3000 HP Swedish-built units were imported from Denmark in 2006 to 09, where they had been MZ-class units for DSB. Mechanically they're very similar to SD40-2s. |

Pacific National Containers |
Description: |
A westbound Pacific National container train (possibly Brisbane to Melbourne 7BM4) heels around a curve before it runs under Cooks Hill road near Yass Junction. NR71 is followed by AN8 AND NR103. The NR-class is the backbone of PNR's intermodal fleet; 120 were built from 1996 by Goninin using GE prime movers and electricals. They're rated at about 4000 HP. |

Trains Pass on the Main South |
Description: |
Australia's standard gauge Main South from Sydney to Melbourne is dual tracked to Junee NSW. It can go for hours without a movement and then you'll have a flurry of activity, like shown here. A "down" (westbound) Pacific national container train with three units passes an "up" grain train behind four 81-class units. This shot was taken from Cooks Hill Rd, about 5km east of Yass Jct. |

Dragging Grain Up Hill |
Description: |
A quartet of Pacific National 81-class units (8152, 8178, 8165, 8110) strain to drag a long grain rake up the roughly 1.3% grade east of Yass Junction. They have a long way to go before reaching the summit at Cullerin. |

End of Train- Australia |
Description: |
A very simple looking EOT device brings up the end of a long Pacific National grain rake headed towards Sydney as it climbs, very slowly, away from Yass Junction. Australia's Main South features an undulating profile over the many hills of New South Wales with frequent grades of up to 2.5%. |

Approaching Yass Junction |
Description: |
The daily eastbound Melbourne to Sydney XPT negotiates the cross-over on arrival to Yass Junction late on a fall afternoon. All passenger trains use the south platform at Yass Junction. As can be seen, that's quite a climb out of town to the west. |

The Changing Face of Aussie Rails |
Description: |
Australia is undergoing a major change to its locomotive fleet as a continuous stream of new high horsepower units are delivered to the country’s major operators. Here two Downer-EDI built GT45C-ACes (LDP-009 and -004) are trailed by UGL-built C44ACi 6007 as they bring Melbourne-Brisbane train 6MB7 upgrade out of Yass Junction. Unfortunately for railfans these units bump a menagerie of older models, some of which date back to the 1950s. While surely in need of replacement, they will be missed. As for QR National, it has also announced that it will become Aurizon Ltd (“Australian Horizon”) in the near future in order to better reflect its continent-wide service. |
