SAR Sheathed Articulated Coach |
Description: |
This articulated coach has (or had) a sheathed wooden body with tapered roof peaks. The two halves were not identical. Based on a similar articulated coach (SAR Type C-22) and judging from the window positions, the interior layout is probably as follows: The left half with the passage on the far side, from left, a vestibule, a boiler compartment and shower, a compartment, a coupe, a compartment, a coupe, a compartment, and a toilet. The right half with the passage on the near side, from left, a toilet, a compartment, a coupe, a compartment, a coupe, a compartment, an attendants coupe, and a vestibule. .....oo....oo....oo..... Overall length over headstocks 91' 4 1/2", Individual length over headstocks 45' 0", Height 12' 5 7/16", Width 8' 11", To seat 39 and two attendants, to sleep 32 and two attendants. |

SAR Sheathed Combine (Side B) |
Description: |
These sheathed wooden commuter coaches disappeared from South African rails during the 1960s and 1970's, gradually getting replaced by all metal coaches with driver controlled sliding doors. This coach started life as a first, second and third class composite baggage-van, one of two built in 1941. Its interior layout is, from left, a baggage compartment with two double doors on each side, a first class compartment, a second class compartment, toilets on both sides of a short passage with an interconnecting door to a third class compartment. At some stage the second class compartment was reclassified to first class and the coach type was changed from V-46-C to Y-10-C. .....oo....oo..... SAR Type Y-10-C, Built 1941, Number range 7376 and 7377, Length over headstocks 60' 8" (18.490m), Height 12' 1 5/16" (3.690m), Width 9' 1 3/4" (2.790m), To seat (as Type V-46-C) 9 1st Class, 18 2nd Class and 54 3rd Class passengers, all non-white, and (as Type Y-10-C) 9 1st Class white, 18 2nd Class non-white and 54 3rd Class non-white passengers. |
