SAR Caboose (Type 2, Side A)
Title:  SAR Caboose (Type 2, Side A)
Description:  This caboose is painted in its original maroon and gray SAR livery. Cabooses are used as living quarters, usually for personnel on tasks away from home at places without suitable accommodation. Even though they are always painted in passenger car livery, they usually run as part of goods trains, in this case a breakdown train. Side A is the compartment side and this model has one door on this side, with no vestibule. The interior layout was, from the left, a kitchen, a two-bed coupe and storage, a shower and toilet, a two-bed coupe, a four-bed compartment, and a store room.

Title:  SAR Class 6E1 E1540 (Series 4)
Description:  In 1973 and 1974 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 4 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1446 to E1545. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). In 1978 E1525 was modified for experiments in high speed traction by re-gearing the traction motors and installing Scheffel bogies and a streamlined nose cone. In this configuration it reached a speed of 245 kilometres per hour (152 miles per hour) on 31 October 1978, a still unbeaten world speed record on Cape gauge. Apart from the narrower stirrup step below the side doors of Series 3 number E1345 and earlier locomotives, Series 3 to Series 5 locomotives are visually indistinguishable from each other.

Description:  In 1974 and 1975 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 5 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1546 to E1645. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). One of them, E1600, was later withdrawn from revenue service and rebuilt to an experimental 25 kV AC locomotive. Apart from the narrower stirrup step below the side doors of Series 3 number E1345 and earlier locomotives, Series 3 to Series 5 locomotives are visually indistinguishable from each other.

Description:  Between 1979 and 1981 the South African Railways placed one hundred and five Class 6E1, Series 8 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1896 to E2000. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). Series 8 is the only 6E1 series with unique visual distinguishing features. It can be distinguished from all earlier series by the large hatch door on each side, below the second small window to the right of the side door on the roof access ladder side, and below the first window immediately to the right of the door on the other side. It can also be distinguished from all subsequent series by the absence of rainwater drainage holes along the lower body sides.

Title:  SAR Class 7E3 E7242 (Series 1)
Description:  In 1983 and 1984 the South African Railways placed sixty Class 7E3, Series 1 electric locomotives with a Co-Co wheel arrangement in mainline service, numbered in the range from E7216 to E7275. Designed by Hitachi, they were built in South Africa by Dorbyl, who also supplied the mechanical components. The two sides of the Class 7E3 are completely different in appearance and a pair of them may appear at first glance to be two different locomotive types. Circa 2000 sixteen of these dual cab locomotives were reclassified to Class 7E4 after being upgraded and rebuilt to single cab locomotives.

Designed by Electro-Motive Diesel, they were built in two batches by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth, numbered in the ranges 35-601 to 35-650 and 35-651 to 35-700. A single Class 35-600 GT18MC locomotive was also built new in 1977 for Columbus Stainless in Middelburg, Transvaal.

SAR Class 37-000 37-020
Title:  SAR Class 37-000 37-020
Description:  Between May 1981 and 1982 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 37-000 EMD GT26M2C diesel-electric locomotives in service. It is a more powerful version of the EMD Class 34-200, 34-600 and 34-800, designed by Electro-Motive Diesel and built by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth. They were numbered in the range from 37-001 to 37-100. In 2008 one of them, no. 37-010, was rebuilt to Class 39 prototype no. 39-251 that was tested but rejected by Transnet and later reported as sold to RRL.

SAR Class 7E1 E7150
Title:  SAR Class 7E1 E7150
Description:  In 1980 and 1981 the South African Railways placed fifty single cab Class 7E1 electric locomotives with a Co-Co wheel arrangement in mainline service, numbered in the range from E7101 to E7150. It was designed by Hitachi, while Dorbyl in South Africa supplied the mechanical components. The first two units were built by Hitachi in Japan in 1979, while forty-eight more were built by Dorbyl in South Africa. The two sides of the Class 7E1 are completely different in appearance and, when coupled end to end, a pair of them appears at first glance to be two different locomotive types.

Description:  Between October 1971 and March 1972 the South African Railways placed fifty Class 34-200 EMD GT26MC diesel-electric locomotives in service. They were built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and imported, numbered in the range from 34-201 to 34-250.

Title:  SAR Class 34-600 34-608
Description:  Between December 1974 and July 1976 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 34-600 EMD GT26MC diesel-electric locomotives in service. Designed by Electro-Motive Diesel, they were built by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth and numbered in the range from 34-601 to 34-700. Beginning in 2005 three Class 39-000 EMD GT26CU-3 locomotives, numbers 39-001, 39-003 and 39-004, were rebuilt from wrecked Class 34-600 locomotives, numbers 34-635, 34-674 and 34-620 respectively.
