Title:  PRR (PC) #4890 [GG1]
Description:  "Overhead Catenary" Looking down in an unusual view on Pennsylvania GG1 #4890, exiting the Hudson River tubes (right) and entering Penn Station, New York (left). Great vantage point - and it still exists! I was here in 2007 purely by coincidence, after going to B&H Photo. I shot the Penn Station interlocking using a friend's digital camera (I never got the photo). When I came across this shot in dad's slide carousels while organizing them, I knew exactly where it was taken from! Dad and I had a good laugh about it. Now with him gone, I treasure this image..

LV Pier
Title:  LV Pier
Description:  Dad took a boat trip with some friends, which allowed views of Manhatton that were off his normal rounds. He took advantage of the new viewpoint to get some interesting photos. One was this Lehigh Valley pier, near Christopher St. It is no longer in service, and at tis point, the question is, will the pier fall into the river before the railroad itself goes under in a couple of years.

Title:  Standard Railroad of the World-or is it the navy??
Description:  Another of the tumble down piers dad encountered on his trip around Manhattan, thit one an ex Pennsy facility, also fallen on hard times like its LV neighbor a few blocks south. Like all the roads that came into the north Jersey terminals, the Pennsy hgd a substantial carfloat operation, though by this date, due to mergers and new traffic patterns, carfloats were almost a memory.

Essex St on the BMT
Title:  Essex St on the BMT
Description:  These were taken on what was most likely an ERA trip with the IRT Low V cars. The TA had a museum set that they would charter for various groups, running to different points on the system. Since the IRT cars were only 9 feet wide, they could go anywhere, and did. This is a shot of them at Essex St on the BMT M line. Thats my brother John on the platform, age 9 at the time.

K train
Title:  K train
Description:  A shot my dad took of the K train at 57 St/6 Av station, which was the Manhattan terminus of this route. The K ran rush hours only from here to Eastern Parkway on whe Broadway BMT, via the newly built(1970) Grand St connectihn, and the Williamsburg Bridge. This was a typical train set for the line. I rode it almost daily in those days, and I dont recall ever seeing anything else on these trains. But the Broadway line was a poor stepchild anyway, with the J and K getting R7s and 9s most of the time, though the J got R 16s and some R 27s.

Warm glow
Title:  Warm glow
Description:  One of the appealing things about the older cars is the use of incandescent bulbs. They give off a much warmer light than fluorescents. Even in a 40 year old subway car, it has fn inviting appeal. This is the K train at 57 St/6 Av. I miss those old cars.

R 27s on the D train
Title:  R 27s on the D train
Description:  The D train during the mid 1970s usually had some of the newest cars assigned to it, mostly R42s, and by 1977, R 46s. R 27s were really uncommon, though, as this photo at 34th St and 6th Av shows, rush hours can make for some strange assignments. A train of R 27s, usually found on the BMTs J, M, and RR trains, pulls away as it picks up speed for a fast run to W 4th St.

R 46
Title:  R 46
Description:  One of the lines that got the new R 46 cars was the N, unusual since the BMT tended to be the poor stepchild of the B Division when it came to car assignments. The IND got all the new cars, with the BMT mostly getting hand me downs that had come off the prime runs. Nonetheless, the N was assigned some of the new cars, one of which we see here during its layover time at 57 St and 7th Av. The interiors, like those of the R 44s that immediately preceded these, was a departure from the longitudinal seating of the cars of the 50s and 60s.

R 10
Title:  R 10
Description:  Believe it or not, the move to R 10s was an improvement for this line. The CC was a rush hour only train that ran from Bedford Park Blvd in the Bronx to Rockaway Park. I often wondered if a train ever made it all the way from one end to the other before the rush hour expired. It was the exception to the rule that the IND got the new cars, and the BMT got the hand me downs. This train got R1/9s almost all the time, though once in a while there would be a set of R 10s, such as these. When the R1/9s were retired, these cars were moved off the A train to the CC. They were the last group on the B Division to have air operated doors, with the conductor standing between cars to operate them. They were already 30 years old by the time I got this photo at 8th Av and 42 St.

Off the train
Title:  Off the train
Description:  There a numerous shots of the Ringling Bros train, in my collection and elsewhere. We dont typically see the wagons once off the train. Dad caught several outside Madison Square Garden in New York. They would reach here either by staging at an old LIRR float bridge yard in Long Island City and going through the Midtown Tunnel, or staging in Jersey, coming through the Lincoln Tunnel. The train got from Long Island, where the circus usually played first, to Jersey via a convoluted route that involved LIRR, Amtrak, and Conrail.

New station
Title:  New station
Description:  Actually it was new in 1970 or so, but while the design was classic IND, the materials-mostly terrazo-were quite a departure from the concrete and tile that had been standard for many years. Dad shot the mezzanine of the 6 Av/57 St IND station, served by the B train at all times except rush hours, when the newly established K train, that went to the Broadway Brooklyn elevated via the new Grand St connection, was in service.

Platform level
Title:  Platform level
Description:  The new station was quite bright, much more so than the older ones, since it had fluorescent lights, rather than the bulbs in the older stations. This made the stations much more appealing, and probably safer. At the time, 57th St was the terminal for the B train, two of which are seen here. The train on the left has just arrived; the train on the right will be departing shortly for Coney Island via the Grand St connection, Manhattan Bridge, and the West End line. The cars are R 32s, the typical equipment on this line. When the K ran during rush hour, it almost always got R 9s. If anyone remembers the opening to Welcome Back Kotter, it was the West End line that you saw the high school from, as it is elevated south of 39th St/9 Av in Brooklyn.

R 32s
Title:  R 32s
Description:  By the time this photo was taken, in 1992, the R 32 cars had already been in service for over 25 years, and would see yet another rebuilding that would carry them into their fifth decade of service. Now having been demoted to secondary lines, they carried on, taking over trains that had once been the stomping grounds of "old" cars-R 10s, for example. As one who recalls these cars in their prime, its hard to see them as the old guard. Were at Chambers St in this photo.

New 30th St
Title:  New 30th St
Description:  The 30th St yarf was formerly a NYC facility, built to serve the trains that worked the West Side Line, now the High Line Park. A connection was built from Penn Station to the yard, and it is now used to store LIRR equipment, saving a round tpip to the Island to lay up for the day. Dad caught a train rolling out among all the slumbering M 1s.

Title:  63rd St Tunnel

Cammerer yard
Title:  Cammerer yard
Description:  Storage at Penn Station has always been limited, due to the lack of space in the area around it. The Pennsy built it as a run through station, with trains going on to Sunnyside yard to be turned and serviced. The problem for the LIRR was that this was the end of the line. Since there was no storage capacity, trains ran back out to the Island after morning rush, only to deadhead back to Penn for their afternoon runs. The advent of Conrail and Amtrak, as well as a decline in rail freight in the city caused a number of changes over the years. One of them was the availability of the ex NYC 30th St yard for other uses. The MTA took advantage of the situation to build a layup yard for the LIRR on the site, known as the John Cammerer yard, in honor of a state senator from Long Island. This is how it looks from the street, full of LIRR MUs in the middle of the day. The facility saves the LIRR several million dollars each year by avoiding the need to run trains as much as 100 extra miles each day in deadhead moves.

Description:  At one time, kiosks such as this one at Braodway and 72nd St were common in Manhattan, but by the late 60s, almost all of them had been removed in favor of the stairs you most commonly see today. The MTA has restored some at various stations, making for a much more elegant entrance to the system.
