Between September 1976 and June 1978 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 35-600 EMD GT18MC diesel-electric locomotives in service. Designed by Electro-Motive Diesel, they were built in two batches by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth, numbered in the ranges 35-601 to 35-650 and 35-651 to 35-700. Beginning in 2000 Spoornet embarked on a program to rebuild dual cab Class 6E1, Series 2 to Series 11 locomotives to single cab Class 18E, Series 1 locomotives that were renumbered in the ranges 18-001 to 18-434 and 18-500 to 18-525. The rebuilding included the installation of Alsthom micro-processor control technology and was done by Transwerk (later Transnet Rail Engineering and then Transnet Engineering) at its Koedoespoort shops in Pretoria, Gauteng. In the process their number 1 end cabs were stripped of all controls in order to have a toilet installed. 18-281 was rebuilt from Class 6E1, Series 9 E2064 and commissioned in 2006. Between May 1981 and 1982 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 37-000 EMD GT26M2C diesel-electric locomotives in service. It is a more powerful version of the EMD Class 34-200, 34-600 and 34-800, designed by Electro-Motive Diesel and built by General Motors South Africa in Port Elizabeth. They were numbered in the range from 37-001 to 37-100. In 2008 one of them, no. 37-010, was rebuilt to Class 39 prototype no. 39-251 that was tested but rejected by Transnet and later reported as sold to RRL.
