SAR Class 15AR 1787 (4-8-2) |
| Description: |
Between 1914 and 1925 the South African Railways placed one hundred and nineteen Class 15A steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain wheel arrangement in service, delivered in ten batches from three manufacturers (North British Locomotive Company, Beyer, Peacock and Company and J.A. Maffei). They were numbered in the ranges 1571 to 1575, 1781 to 1828, 1839 to 1858, 1961 to 1970, 2011 to 2025 and 2080 to 2100. All but five Class 15A locomotives were later reboilered with Watson Standard no. 2A boilers and reclassified to Class 15AR.

SAR Class 24 3690 (2-8-4) |
| Description: |
In 1949 and 1950 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 24 branch line locomotives with a 2-8-4 Berkshire wheel arrangement in service. The locomotive was designed by Chief Mechanical Engineer Dr. M.M. Loubser, built by North British Locomotive Company and numbered in the range from 3601 to 3700. The cast engine main frames and the Buckeye bogies for the tenders were supplied by General Steel Castings of Eddystone, Pennsylvania and they were built with Watson Standard no. 1 boilers and Vanderbilt torpedo type tenders that ran on three axle Buckeye bogies.

SAR Class 36-000 36-043 |
| Description: |
Between June 1975 and 1981 the South African Railways placed one hundred and twenty-four Class 36-000 GE SG10B diesel-electric locomotives in service, numbered in the range from 36-001 to 36-124. Designed by General Electric, they were built in three batches by the South African General Electric-Dorman Long Locomotive Group (SA GE-DL, later Dorbyl). The first one hundred locomotives were delivered by September 1978, followed in 1981 by two batches of twenty and four locomotives respectively.

The first ten of ninety-five 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC dual voltage Class 20E electric locomotives for Transnet Freight Rail were built in China in 2013 and 2014 by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., a subsidiary of the China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR), China's leading train manufacturer. The remaining eighty-five locomotives were built in South Africa by a consortium composed of CSR Zhuzhou and the South African Black Economic Empowerment company Matsetse Basadi. They are intended for service on the ore export line between Sishen and Port Elizabeth and are numbered in {he range from 20-001 to 20-095.
