Doing the Spiral |
Description: |
The daily "up" Melbourne to Sydney XPT makes a turn on the Bethungra Spiral. (what US railfans call a Loop) It's about to enter one of two tunnels at the location. The Spiral was built in WWII to reduce grades for "UP" (Sydney-bound) trains from 2.5% to 1.5%. |

Doing the Spiral (2) |
Description: |
The daily Melbourne to Sydney XPT makes a hard turn on the Bethungra Spiral. This is the back end- the lead unit is already in the tunnel as it makes a complete 360 degree climbing turn to the right. The spiral (what we call a loop in the US) was built on the Sydney-Melbourne Main South during WWII to reduce grades for "up" (towards Sydney, eastbound) train. "Down" (away from Sydney, westbound) trains use the original grade. |

Steel Train at Bethungra Spiral |
Description: |
The air is boiling as a trio of NR-class units haul a Blue Scope steel train towards Melbourne on a Sunday afternoon. As a 'down' train (away from Sydney) it will stay on the original line and bypass the spiral, which is normally used by "up" trains only. |
