Description: |
D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 72 was built in August 1941 (c/n 64186) and traded to EMD as credit on an order of SD45's on Januar{ 23, 1967. This Baldwin has just brought CB&Q's Denver Zephyr Colorado Springs Connection cars over from the D&RGW side of town to the Santa Fe side for the return thp to Denver. When the northboud Royal Gorge arrives, 72 will tack these cars onto the back of that train. |

AT&SF RSD5 2135 |
Description: |
AT&SF RSD5 (Alco spec. E-1664) 2135 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80604) and delivered in the "zebra stripe" paint scheme, it was renumbered to 9135 August 13, 1970, traded to EMD during 1972 on a SD45-2 order. The month this locomotive was built marked the introduction of the GE Model RD-3 water-cooled turbocharger on Alco's 12-cylinder Model 244 prime mover, which replaced GE's RD-1 air-cooled turbo. The spotting feature is the exhaust stack, which was oriented length-wise to the hood in the case of the RD-1, and cross-wise (as seen here) in the case of the RD-3. The RD-3 was replaced in production during September 1954 with Alco's own design, the Model 510 for 12-cylinder engines and Model 710 for 16-cylinder engines. I have not (yet) figured out what that extra pipe is running along the top of the hood and up the side of the exhaust stack, nor why the numberboard on the short hood was relocated. |

Thos is the rear view, the AT&SF had their RSD5's set up short hood forward. A total of 204 RSD5's were built by Alco between March 1952 and March 1955. The Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were the largest operaors of the RSD5 with 53 on the AT&SF and 64 on the SP. However, by 1959 the SP traded 21 of their RSD5's back to Alco for RSD12's. The Santa Fe employed its large fleet of RSD's nainly in New Mexico and Colorado in many roles. The appearance of Second Generation power in the 1960's found the AT&SF RSD fleet rapidly retired. I was in Colorado Springs wdth my parents (I'm 16 at the time of the photo) and we we're heading back home on the Denver Zephyr connection. I believe this locomotive was substituting for an ailing'Baldwin VO-1000 2218, which was laid up and off to the right. The AT&SF and the C&S had switching agreements at the time, and the AT&SF was responsible for switching at Colorado Springs. |

AT&SF VO-1000 2218 |
Description: |
AT&SF VO-1000 2218 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1943 (c/n 67725) it was retired March 30, 1971 and went to PNC in June of that year. Note that it is stencilled for both the AT&SF and C&S. At the time of this photo, this unit was assigned as the station switcher at the joint AT&SF/C&S depot. Those two roads had a switching agreement with AT&SF providing a Baldwin or two, an RSD4 (#2107), and a GE 44 ton (#464), and the C&S providing EMD products. It appears that the C&S handled the switching in Denver, and the AT&SF handled the switching in Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The C&S locomotives were lettered C&S over AT&SF, and the AT&SF locomotives were lettered AT&SF (or Santa Fe) over C&S. |

It is seen here northbound at the AT&SF station with the daily unnamed Train #8 which originated in Houston, Texas the day before, and will terminate in Denver at 6:05 PM, a couple hours from this photo time. C&S E5 9955 |
Description: |
Colorado & Southern Railroad E5 9955 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is daily unnamed Train 8-28, leaving Dallas at 9:20 PM, stopping at almost every station between Dallas and Denver, arriving at Colorado Springs at 4:20 PM the next day, finally arriving in Denver at 6:05 PM, almost 22 hours after starting out. This locomotive was built as CB&Q 9914A and was involved in a collision with a crawler (IHC Model TD-18 TracTracTor weighing 23,945 pounds) that had just slipped off a flat car of a freight train passing in the opposite direction. The collision happened at Downers Grove, Illinois on April 3, 1947. The 9914A was the single locomotive powering Train No. 24 consisting of seven cars and was moving at approximately 70 mph at the point of collision. Upon impact the tractor was destroyed, the rear locomotive coupler was pulled out, the locomotive separated from its train and continued upright for 470 feet before hitting the Downers Grove passenger platform where it turned over on its right side, fatally injuring the Engineer. Meanwhile the passenger cars continued to roll and crashed into the station. Although the locomotive was extensively damaged, it was repaired and returned to service. |

It is seen here at the head of northbound unnamed Train #8, having left Houston, Texas the previous afternoon at 3:00 PM, due in Denver at 6:05 PM. After the C&S discontinued passenger service in 1967, the C&S E5's were pressed into freight service, but were ill suited for slow drag freights and burned up traction motors quickly. Note the retractable front coupler and buffer seen in the extended position. When retracted the coupler was covered with doors, since removed, and because it took 85 complete revolutions of the hand crank to fully extend or retract the coupler, in later years it was left in the extended position. |

Description: |
D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 72 has completed the transfer of these passenger cars from the D&RGW station to the AT&SF station. The windows are being washed for the return trip to Denver behind the D&RGW's Royai Gorge. These cars represent the Colorado Springs connection of the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr. Typically this consisted of a Slumbercoach, a Reclining Seat Chair car, and either the Chuck Wagon (Buffet service) Vista-Dome and/or a Vista-Dome Reclining Seat Chair car, depending on the passenger demand. |

D&RGW VO-660 72 |
Description: |
D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Perhaps this is a mixed train, but there are no revenue passengers carried, so more correctly, this is a switching move. The D&RGW Train #1, The Royal Gorge, had arrived and dropped off the passenger cars, seen at the end of this train (the closest car is a leased/borrowed Great Northern sleeper, business was good this day). This was the Chicago Burlington & Quincy's Denver Zephyr connection between Denver and Colorado Springs. Number 72 has completed the morning switching chores at the local industries, and has coupled up to the Denver Zephyr cars, and will move them to the other side of town. For those not familiar with Colorado Springs, the southbound tracks were on the west side of town, served by the D&RGW and Rock Island depot, and about a half mile to the east was the Santa Fe depot used for the northbound rail traffic, so this switching job included turning and transferring the Denver Zephyr cars from the southbound to the northbound side of town. Number 72 will tack the passenger cars onto the rear of D&RGW Train #2, The Royal Gorge, for the return trip to Denver, where they will be cut into the waiting CB&Q Train #10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr. |
