CBQ 4-8-4 #5629 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy |
Description: |
We were impressed by the massive CBQ 4-8-4 #5629. Wish it had been in the sunwhen I took the photo! The largest steam engine at the Museum, CB&Q No. 5629 was built in 1940 by the Burlington Route Railroad in their own shops and was used for heavy freight and passenger service. It remained in service until the early 1960s, when it was purchased by the Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 1963. No. 5629 is one of only four Burlington locomotives of its type still in existence. |

These included a section for baggage and express mail as well as a compartment for use of the postal service. The new cars operated on the Billings & Denver and Denver & Amarillo RPO routes until these were discontinued in 1967. |

CS Snowplow #99201- Colorado & Southern |
Description: |
Again, I was on the "dark side" of the CS snowplow #99201 when I took the photo. I did wise up on taking better pictures after seeing these. This C&S rotary snowplow operated over a number of Colorado mountain lines from 1899 until 1965. Large spinning blades on the front threw snow high and far to either side of the track, clearing the way for trains. Power to spin the rotary blades was generated by a steam engine located in the plow. The plow cannot move itself and must be pushed by locomotives. It was donated to the Museum in October of 1972. |

FCMR Trolley #22 - Fort Collins Municipal Rwy |

My wife checks out the Fort Collins Municipal Rwy trolley #22 while we were there. The car was built for use in Fort Collins, Colorado, by the American Car Company of St. Louis in 1919 and was used until 1951, when the streetcar service in Fort Collins was abandoned. It is a type of streetcar known as a Birney "Safety Car". The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club purchased it in 1953 and moved it to Denver.[2] After five years in storage, car 22 was moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 1958[2] and put on display there. |

CBQ 4-8-4 #5629 |
Description: |
Built in West Burlington, Iowa in June 1940, No. 5629 was one of 15 engines—numbered 5621 to 5635—that constituted the last new class of steam locomotives. Designed for fast freight and heavy passenger service, No. 5629 began its career on the Chicago to Denver mainline. It was transferred to the Twin Cities in the mid-1940s and made its way back west in 1950, hauling freight between Lincoln, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado. After being converted from burning coal to oil, it was stored in Lincoln and served as a stationary boiler, providing heat to the Lincoln station during a renovation in the winter of 1961. On August 30, 1963, CB&Q Vice President J.J. Alms presented No. 5629 to the Colorado Railroad Museum Rail fan Jim Lockart took this color slide on one of his trips to the museum. |
