Title:  AMTK 599
Description:  Eleven-month-old Amtrak 599 passes 109-year-old K Tower at Union Station in Washington DC. While the old tower was built in 1906, Amtrak 599 - an NRE 2GS12B-R - was built in February 2014. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

AMTK 615
Title:  AMTK 615
Description:  Siemens is currently building new electric power for Amtrak near Sacramento, California. The new engines, model ACS-64, are high-tech engines that will replace the now mothballed HHP-8s and the remaining AEM-7 locomotives. While touring the cab of Amtrak 615, our host pointed out a button in the control panel - the second button on the top row, just above the monitor, has a flag icon. When pressed, the Star Spangled Banner plays from speakers behind the engineer! Seriously! And its a pretty good sound system, too. However, no one Ive spoken with has yet to determine why this feature was included on these locomotives... (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

Title:  AMTK 615
Description:  I never thought about it before, but apparently some locomotives have windshield washers! Amtrak ACS-64, an electric locomotive, has no fuel fill, but it does have a windshield washer fluid fill. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

Title:  AMTK 615
Description:  Still fairly clean, as it hasnt been in service long, is the interior corridor of Amtrak ACS-64 615. Unlike most electric locomotives, these Siemens locomotives have a single corridor running through the center, rather than on either side of the components. And the components have a much cleaner appearance than in the AEM-7s that the ACS-64s are replacing - this looks more like a space craft than a locomotive inside. And much brighter lighting, too! (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

AMTK 948
Title:  AMTK 948
Description:  Awaiting its departure time at Washington DCs Union Station, Amtrak AEM-7AC 948 is in charge of one of the carriers many, many Northeast Regional trains, which connect population centers all along the eastern seaboard. Buit as an AEM-7 in 1988, and converted to AC power in July 2001, motor 948 is nearling the end of its service life as Amtraks 900s are replaced with newer Siemens-built 600-class ACS-64 locomotives. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

AMTK 948
Title:  AMTK 948
Description:  Considering that Amtraks AEM-7 electric locomotives are being retired, the engineroom is still much cleaner than it would be in a diesel-electric locomotive. This is one of the two hallways in AEM-7AC 948 (built in 1988), which has the components arrayed in the center of the locomotive. (Photogaphed on railroad property with permission and full PPFE.)

Amtrak K Tower
Title:  Amtrak K Tower
Description:  Tower K, constructed in 1906, is located in Washington DC's Unian Station, and controls the movements of all Amtrak, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains on 22 tracks. And there are over 100 trains per day that use this statiom (a little fewer on weekends), and many change from diesel power to electric power (or vice versa) here, making the operators located in Tower K extremely busy! On this visit there were four operators keepinb everything moving seamlessly. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)
