CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-2 5211
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-2 5211
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-2 5211, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Riverview Publications, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5211 was built by Baldwin in September 1912 (c/n 38285) as a Class O-2 and retired in May 1933. The CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated November 1, 1932 indicates that this locomotive was store unserviceable at West Burlington, Iowa.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622, location and date unknown, print stamped Burlington Route Photo, credit line will be appreciated, Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co. Advertising Dept., 547 W. Jackson, Chicago, print scanned from Louis Zadnichek collection. The print was also stamped: John Gibb Smith Jr. 6701 N. 12th Street, Philadelphia. Hand written on the print was the following: CB&Q RR Late No. 5622, O-5-A 5622 high speed freight & passenger locomotive built in CB&Q shops at West Burlington, Iowa. Two of these engines are now in service; three more will be completed this fall. 38722A.

According to the book, 'Steam locomotives Of The Burlington Route', by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka, number 5622 was completed at West Burlington in August 1938, so this photo was likely shot around that date. The boilers were built by Baldwin, and the builder's plate on the smokebox would show Baldwin Extra Order 6675. There were five boilers built on Extra Order 6675, which were applied to locomotives 5621 through 5625. The rest of the locomotive was assembled from components from various suppliers. Number 5622 was retired in May 1960.

Hol Wagner adds: That is indeed the west end of the West Burlington storehouse, with the main erecting shop's east end just out of view behind the photographer to the right. And of course this means the view is of the north side of the locomotive, thus the sun is on the other side. Fred Lehmann must not have been able to get them to move the 5622 down the length of the erecting shop and into the clear for a south side photo.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-4 Class M-4 6315, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Riverview Publications, Chuck Zeiler collection. My best guess is West Burlington, Iowa around October 1939. Number 6315 was built by Baldwin in October 1927 ( c/n 60255 ), rebuilt to Class M-4-A in October 1939, sold for scrap in April 1961.

Title:  CB&Q NW2 9413A
Description:  CB&Q NW2 9413A at West Burlington, Iowa on September 29, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. It's almost not fair to call this a locomotive, even the horn has been removed. It was built as a TR2A during November 1949 (c/n 8508), mated with cabless TR2B 9413B, the last TR2 set of 14 (9400A&B through 9413A&B). The TR2's were broken up in 1954, and the B-units were returned to EMD for installation of cabs. They were re-classed as NW2's by the CB&Q, and were the only NW2's on the system with MU&capability. It became BN 572 and was retired September 1983.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9915A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915A at West Burlington, Iowa on September 29, 1963, Kodak Tri-X negative by Chuck Zeiler. This was the occasion of the 23rd birthday of steam locomotive 5632, and the CB&Q sponsored a fantrip to the West Burlington, Iowa shops, where 5632 had been constructed. There were a variety of locomotives on the floor in various stages of repair, and according to the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10, 9915A (once named Silver Carrier) was wrecked at Bigelow MO on 4/22/63, and traded in on a U25B around 3/65. I don't know if it was returned to service in between.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5632 was built in this shop, completed in August 1940. It was selected for fan trip service in the 1960's, and was in the process of overhaul on this photo date. The event was a birthday special powered by diesel from Chicago to Galesburg and by 4960 from Galesburg to West Burlington and return. The plan had been to return 5632 to fan trip service, however, fate stepped in. The President of the CB&Q, Harry C. Murphy, retired and control of the CB&Q was in the hands of Louis W. Menk. Menk had no interest in steam or fan trips, the programs were quickly teminated, and 5632 and a few boxcars of parts and machinery were sold to Richard Jensen. Unfortunately, Jensen stored the disassembled 5632 (no flues or staybolts) in a C&WI roundhouse around 47th Street in Chicago, which was soon abandon and slated for demolition. Although 5632 was moved to the south side of Chicago for storage, it derailed in a scrap yard and was cut up on the spot. More information here:

CB&Q NW2 9406B
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9406B
Description:  CB&Q NW2 9406B at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as a TR2B (a cabless NW2) during February 1949 (c/n 6576) on EMD Order E1009B for nine TR2B's, it was delivered drawbar-connected with 9406A as a single 2000 horsepower locomotive, commonly known as a cow-calf set. During 1954, the TR2B's were returned to EMD for the addition of cabs, and were returned as NW2's. The returned units featured a single taper hood and new style cabs and headlights, the spotting feature of the cabs being the rectangular windows over the hood in place of the original NW2's arched windows. The 9400's (9400-9413 A and B) were the only MU equipped NW2's on the Q. This locomotive became BN 559 and was retired during October 1983.

CB&Q PMC 9772
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9772
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9772 at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the book, The Burlington In Transition, by Bernard G. Corbin and Joseph C. Hardy, there were two gas-electric cars built by Saint Louis Car Company, powered by Winton 275 horsepower gasoline engines, delivered to the CB&Q, both numbered 570. The first 570 was built in May 1927 (EMC # 209), renumbered 835, renumbered again in January 1928 to 9835, sold in October 1936 to Alabama Tennesse & Northern as AT&N 51. The car pictured was 2nd 570, built in November 1928 (EMC # 299), renumbered 9570 in May 1930, renumbered again on December 1933 to 9772. At an unknown date it was converted to diesel electric (the fuel tank is stenciled DIESEL FUEL), and sold for scrap in August 1966.

This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9912 sometime after the merger (March 2, 1970) and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It is seen here undergoing repairs at the Burlington's West Burlington shops. The occasion was steam fantrip powered by 4960, celebrating the birthday of 5632, which was also undergoing repairs at West Burlington. Although 9931B would be returned to service, 5632 would not.

CB&Q Midwest 9123
Title:  CB&Q Midwest 9123
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Midwest 9123, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The chosen date and location are my best guess. Number 9123 was built by Midwest Locomotive Works of Hamilton, Ohio in October 1934 (c/n 1075). It was one of three built ( CB&Q #'s 9121, 9122, 9123) and the only three locomotives built by Midwest. Number 9121 was built in October 1933, and was the first diesel locomotive on the Burlington, pre-dating the Pioneer Zephyr (built April 1934) by several months. The Midwest locomotives were powered by a pair of Cummins L-6 six-cylinder four-cycle diesels rated at 225 horsepower each. Electrical equipment was from GE, a pair of GT-1160-B-1 self-exciting generators and four 714-B-1 traction motors. Number 9121 was requisitioned on October 1941 by the US Army during WWII becoming USAX 7196, later sold to Stockton Terminal & Eastern, becoming STE 10, scrapped in 1959. Number 9122 lasted until 1962, and 9123 lasted until November 1965. Number 9123 was the only unit altered with louvers added to the carbody and box-like vents in diagonally opposite corners of the cab roof. The bell, originally behind the headlight on one end, was moved forward toward the cab, and later to a location below the frame. It shows evidence of exhaust stack extensions, probably to help clear the added roof vents.

Description:  BN GP9 1967 at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as CB&Q GP9 282 in July 1954 (c/n 19621), became BN 1967 sometime after March 2, 1970, and was retired in March 1987. Behind the cab on this side is evidence of the Vapor standby heater, installed by the CB&Q on all their GP7's and GP9's. It was designed to heat and circulate the diesel engine cooling water, allowing the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather and prevent freezing. It was seldom employed because of the difficulty in restarting the diesel with cold batteries.

Title:  BN SD40-2 6801
Description:  BN SD40-2 6801 at West Burlington on Iowa, October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chsck Zeiler. You'cl have to take my word about the road number, I probably saw it chalked on the frame somewhere. I shot several slides of this locomotive and all are marked as #6801. Built in March 1973 (c/n 72639-02) as BN 6341, a Locotrol Master Unit. It is seen here 10 years after being built, the occasion was a Burlington Route Historical Society Meet in Burlington, Iowa, and we were allowed a tour of the shops at West Burlington.

Title:  BN SD40-2 7003
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad SD40-2 7003 at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Burlington Route Historical Society was permitted a tour of the shops during their annual meet in Burlington, Iowa on this photo date and 7003 was in this condition at that time. The low angle is the result of no tripod, slow film, and low light, forcing me to place the camera on the floor and shoot a time exposure.

BN SD40-2 7860
Title:  BN SD40-2 7860
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad SD40-2 7860 at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983 Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in October 1978 ( c/n 786001-5 ) on EMD Order 786001 for 13 SD40-2's for the Colorado & Southern ( #'s 7856-7868 ). Five years later, 7860 was in the shops for some major work. The following is a paragraph from the publication, "Burlington Northern 1977-80 Annual", by Hol Wagner: "During 1978 it was finally decided to renumber all C&S and FW&D locomotives into the BN numbering system ( as had been originally proposed 10 years earlier ). Actual renumbering did not get under way until December 1978, and then only the C&S 930-961 series SD40-2's used in coal service were changed, becoming 7800-7831, more than six months after new C&S SD40-2's 7832-7855 were delivered. Slots for other C&S/FW&D units were not finalized until July 1979, with renumbering beginning in earnest during September. With the exception of four FW&D GP7's slated for retirement, the renumbering was completed during 1980. The C&S and FW&D initials disappeared from above or near the numberboards but were supposed to remain near the BN logo on the cab sides. In many cases however, the owner's initials were removed entirely from the units, creating confusion for photo collectors, since quite a few of the numbers had previously been used by the BN on locomotives of the same model."

Title:  BN Shop Switcher
Description:  Burlington Northern Shop Switcher at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This shows the other side of the shop switcher, I'm not sure if this was the Engineer's side or the Conductor's side. It was powered by an extension cord (not seen in this view) which could be plugged at various locations around the shop.

BN Shop Switcher
Title:  BN Shop Switcher
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad Shop Switcher at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is pretty self-explanatory except for the charging of the air tanks. The BN modified an EMD SD-series truck to move dead locomotives around the shop. By plugging into a convenient DC outlet (note the coiled extension cord) the switcher could move a locomotive from one location to another within the range of the power cable. How did I get this photo, you might ask? I was attending the Burlington Route Historical Society's Meeting in Burlington, and this tour of the West Burlington Shops was part of the package.
