CA 2-6-0 #2401 - Chicago & Alton |
Description: |
This Mogul type locomotive, built by Burnham, Wms & Co in 1899 for the Chicago & Alton, sits outside the Joliet roundhouse. Specifics - originally built as a class F3 Mogul with 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, compound 20x28" cylinders, engine weight of 159,800 lb, tractive effort of 30,710 lb. In the 1920's, they were refitted with 62" drivers with a loss in tractive effort. The class of locomotives was simplified later, restored 57" drivers and reclassified as K-18. Most of the class was either sold off when B&O took control or scrapped before the 1940's. I could not find the disposition of this loco. No photographer listed. |

EJE 0-8-0 #579 - Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Rwy |
Description: |
This beefy 0-8-0 yard switcher started life out as Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern Rwy 2-8-0 #579 (serial #44414). Records show that this was scrapped in September of 1948, the same date as this photo so this may be the last time it was seen before the scrapper's torch. No photographer was listed. built by Alco-Pittsburgh in August of 1907. After the CLS&E was merged into the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern that same year, this loco fell on the EJE roster. In April of 1931, it was converted to the 0-8-0 you see here. |

EJ&E DRS-6-6-1500 501 |
Description: |
EJ&E DRS-6-6-1500 501 at Joliet, Illinois on February 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1949 as Bessemer & Lake Erie 402 (c/n 73989), one of seven built for the B&LE, this unit (and one other) was purchased in March 1956 by EJ&E. It first worked wearing B&LE paint scheme with EJ&E under the window, it was later painted with orange over black. It was retired in June 1973 and sold to Striegel Equipment Corporation. Although built in 1949, this design dated back to 1944, and included three models; DRS-6-4-1500 (Diesel Road Switcher, 6 axles, 4 traction motors, 1500 horsepower), DRS-4-4-1500, and DRS-6-6-1500. It was powered by Baldwin's 608SC (SC = SuperCharged, or today, turbocharged) diesel prime mover driving a Westinghouse 489-B main generator powering six Westinghuse 370 series traction motors. To make room for the middle traction motor, the center axle was offset. The long hood was considered the Front of the locomotive. The C&NW placed the order for the first production DRS-6-6-1500's in 1948, and by 1952, the 608SC prime mover was replaced by the 608A, and the DRS model was replaced by the AS model. The final tally was; 91 DRS-6-4-1500's (62 for export), 35 DRS-4-4-1500's (3 for export), and 83 DRS-6-6-1500's (all domestic). |

EJ&E DT-6-6-2000 704 |
Description: |
EJ&E DT-6-6-2000 704 at Joliet, Illinois on February 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 704 was built in March 1948 as EJ&E 104 (c/n 73712), originally equipped with two Baldwin 606SC (SC = Super Charged, utilizing an Elliot BF-34 turbocharger) six-cylinder diesel prime movers. It was rebuilt during December 1960 by EJ&E and the 606SC's were replaced with 606A's. The 606A's improvements over the 606SC included a newly-designed Elliot H-503 turbocharger, new web plates to improve alignment between the prime mover and main generator, heavier and dynamically-balanced crankshaft and conndcting rods, improved lubrication, and new mounting points to reduce operating shocks, and resulting in an increase in horsepower from 1000 (606SC) to 1325 (606A), pretty good for six cylinders. This unit was retired in February 197< and traded to EMD. |

EJ&E DT-6-6-2000 921 |
Description: |
EJ&E Baldwin/EMD DT-6-6-2000 921 at Joliet, Illinois on February 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 921 was built by Baldwin in August 1948 (c/n 73729) as EJ&E 121. Originally powered by two Baldwin Model 606SC diesels with Westinghouse electrical gear, it was repowered by EMD in April 1957 with two 567C prime movers. However, because of the Westinghouse electrical gear, which was reused, the prime movers could not produce the full 1200 horsepower at 800 rpm, but were limited to 625 rpm to protect the main generators from flashng over. This had a side effect of being hard of the 567C's which suffered from poor lubrication and overheating. Eventually adjustments were made and the repowering proved to be a tolerable success. The EMD hoods were tapered at the bottom to fit the narrow Baldwin frame, and special handrail stanchions were fashioned to allow space for the passage of personnel around the wider hoods. This unit was retired in July 1976. |
