Title:  CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-8 1729
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-8 1729 at Leavenworth, Kansas on April 3, 1938, photograph by Truman Boyd, Louis Zadnichek collection via Robert W. Johnston. Number 1729 was built by Baldwin in March 1901 ( c/n 18795 ) as a 2-6-2 for the Hannibal & Saint Joseph as number 571, renumbered into the CB&Q system as 1729 ( Class R-2 ) in 1904, rebuilt in 1918 by the CB&Q to 0-6-0 Class G-8, retaining the 1729 road number, retired in December 1946.

CNW in Kansas
Title:  CNW in Kansas
Description:  When the Chicago North Western took over the CGW in 1968 it inherited that road's stretch of trackage rights over the MP from Leavenworth to Kansas City. Here SD40 884 leads a train off the Missouri River Bridge and across the MP Falls City Sub. It will make a hard left turn and take the MP the rest of the way to KC. 884 is followed by an SD40-2 and a pair of GP38-2s.

Title:  Working downtown
Description:  BN ran a small piece of former CB&Q trackage in Leavenworth KS until 1987 when the line from E. Leavenworth MO was abandoned along with the bridge that crossed the Missouri River. The elevator is gone as well now. Here SW1000 436 works the yard at roughly 4th and Choctaw in March 1982. The view looks almost due east, straight to the bridge.

Missouri River bridge
Title:  Missouri River bridge
Description:  This bridge over the Missouri River was opened in%1894 and used by the RI, CGW/CNW and CB&Q/BN through 1987, when it was dismantled. This view looks east towards Missouri. The straight tracks head into Leavenworth, the curved section to the sight was used by the CGW/CNW to access the MP main to Kansas City. Up through 1949 the CGW had an engine facility and wye on the other side of the river, at Stillings (Kirmeyer). This was as far south as their 2-10-4 Texas types came; weight restrictions and the curve kept them from going any further, the road typically using 2-8-2s to get their freight to KC.

Description:  The west end of the Leavenworth Bridge over the Missouri River. Used by the Rock Island, CGW- CB&Q and those that followed, the structure was demolished in 1987.

Title:  Diamonds No More
Description:  It's 1987 and the CNW line across the Missouri River is being abandoned in favor of the ex-RI "Spine Line". MP has already cut the diamonds out on the curve that the CNW and CGW used to turn trains onto the MOP for the final lap to KC. The other track will still be used by the BN for a few months to serve the last few customers it has in Leavenworth before it too is abandoned. The bridge and tracks will all be gone by Christmas.

Bridge Goes Here
Title:  Bridge Goes Here
Description:  The Leavenworth Terminal Bridge was opened in 1894 and operated through May 1987, when the last BN train used it. By Christmas the structure was completely dismantled. Built for the Rock Island and Burlington Route, the structure was also used by the CGW. The Rock Island pulled out of town in 1939 while the BN and CNW followed in time. The signal mast points toward the Missouri side, which was called Kirmeyer by the CGW. The small depot has since been restored.
