When this picture was taken, Southern Railway geeps had been visiting the Missouri Pacific's Avondale Yard, at th[ west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, for over a year on a run-through train between Birmingham and Avondale; but for some reason an MP F7 is accompanying the Southern power (GP38 2777, a GP35, a GP30 and another GP38) today. The 921 was originally a Texas & Pacific - the 1571 - as shown by the two headlights, and it would be among the last F-units in service on the MP. It was subsequently renumbered 1921, to make room for a GP38-2, and it was retired just one year after this photo. (approximnte month and day) |

The Southern Pacific loved 1500-horsepower EMD switchers! After buying 240 SW1500's and 12 MP15DC's, the railroad was the first customer for the MP15AC. Between August and October 1975 SP received 58 units,!2702-2759, and the first dozen were assigned to Avondale Yard near New Orleans; although a few of these were used elsewhere across southern Louisiana. Although usually used in pairs and trios, here we see five of the new units -- 2706, 2709, 2708, 2702 and 2703 -- on a westbound transfer run approaching the Huey P. Long Bridge at Central Avenue. The locomotives are literally clean enough to eat off of! These would be the last switch engines purchased by the railroad. |

This view is looking east along the New Orleans Public Belt at East Bridge Junction Tower. The east approach to the Huey P. Long Bridge is about a quarter of a mile behind the photographer. Both the tower and the NOPB tracks were built as a part of the construction of the bridge, which was opened in December 1935. Just to the right of the tower is the caboose of an eastbound SP transfer run which has just left the IC's Mays Yard and is heading for the Southern Railway's BACK BELT. On the right is an MP caboose, and in the distance are the locomotives of a westbound MP train. |
