The KCS abandoned its track here in 1985, after it obtained trackage rights over 6.5 miles of the ICG-between Frellsen and East Bridge Junction. The overpass is U.S. Highway 61.

Title:  Amtrak Steam Excursion
Description:  An impatient motorist watches as Amtrak dome-observation 9310, formerly Wabash and N&W 1601, brings up the rear of the 1977 TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION as the train passes through Kenner, Louisiana on the Illinois Central Gulf. The train is running about three and a half hours late because of problems with former SP 4449, and is being powered by a pair of ICG GP10's. In a few minutes it will pause at the ICG's Mays Yard so some of its passengers can transfer to the northbound PANAMA LIMITED for their trip home. Mays Yard is about 20 minutes from the train's destination, New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Two days later the train left New Orleans over the SP for Portland.

This is eight miles from the railroad's WEST YARD and 11 miles from NEW ORLEANS UNION PASSENGER TERMINAL The track on the right is the Illinois Central Gulf's BATON ROUGE DISTRICT, while the crossing in the background is the ICG's McCOMB DISTRICT. The KCS abandoned its track here in 1985 after it obtained trackage rights over 6.5 miles of the ICG, between Frellsen and East Bridge Junction.

Description:  Relco (Railway Equipment Leasing Co.) Alco S2 1048 was parked outside the company's shop along the Illinois Central Gulf on Short Street in Kenner, Louisiana. The track on the right was the original Yazoo & Mississippi Valley main line between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, but it had been replaced by a revised connection between the Illinois Central's BATON ROUGE and McCOMB DISTRICTS at Orleans Junction. This shop served Relco's customers along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and they subsequently relocated to a larger facility along the Baton Rouge District at St. Gabriel, Louisiana.

Description:  For a brief period of time in 1993 coal trains destined for the Daniel Electric Generating Plant near Escatawpa, Mississippi operated on a test route that took them through New Orleans where they were handed off from the KCS to the CSX. At the time there were no other regular coal train movements through the Crescent City making this a rather unique move. The loaded trains operated on the KCS as train No. 89. Here we see train No. 89 approaching Alliance Avenue near Frellsen Junction behind KCS SD40-2 637 (the first SD40-2 ever built) and sister KCS SD40-2 646.
